I've taken several years off from cars, so I'm a bit out of the loop on what's available for REAR brake options.
I plan to use the Type E, E-Z Stop front kit. But in the rear,. . . I'm a huge fan of 4-wheel disc brakes on these cars because of all the weight in the rear. The rear does a lot of the stopping on these cars (way more than a front-engine car) due to the front-ends being so light. So what's available for upgraded rear brakes today?? I do not plan to run aftermarket wheels so they must fit the stock 14" wheels.
And GO!! _________________ Regards,

well, semi metallic pads... I used to run one organic, one semi metallic shoe in each drum. There isn't a disc kit for reduction boxes. |

Totally forgot to mention that I'm upgrading to '70 bus rear suspension and an IRS box. _________________ Regards,

You are making it hard on yourself with the bay parts.
Run the Type E IRS kit, and it comes with caliper brackets welded to the hub. Add T1 rear rotors, and a pair of CB park brake calipers, and you are done. Working E-brake, rear disks, and lots of bolt pattern options.

Hey Brian - Can that setup be adjusted to the same as stock ride heigth with rgb's? Or lowered only?
Width diff vs drum to drum? |

The stock height IRS kit is still being tested.
I have 3 guys running stock height hubs. 944/thing CV's or empi off road T2 CV's are a must.
I will be installing a full stock height IRS kit on a locals bus in April. I want to make sure the stock height kit is all 100% before I turn it loose.
I will make some changes to the stock height hub width when I get the locals installed. It will be a mix of close to stock width and able to use the correct length axle shaft.

using bay window parts in a split bus is creating way more work for yourself for no benefit.
use the Type E IRS kit for easy painless install.
BUT, if you're intending to stay stock height then you may run into CV angle issues. Not to mention you will need specific trans gearing to turn a large stock-sized tire.
after those issues are addressed, you can use any type one disc brake kit your heart desires.
and before anyone says beetle disc brakes are not sufficient, this is utterly false. On one of my personal buses (65 westfalia), I run the Type E EZ-stop kit in front, and the CB performance rear beetle discs and it stops way faster than it should. I live in the mountains and drive the bus hard, the brakes are wonderful. _________________ drive your split. |

I understand the idea of a bolt-on style kit to make things "easier", but I'm a fabricator. . . Adding a pair of factory bus, IRS hinges to the underside of the frame-horns and re-enforcing the area,. . . is actually really simple and just basic fabrication.
Then using a beefed IRS trans w/ thing stubs and bus axles seems like a no-brainer to me. . . Literally everything but the hinge point is a bolt-in.
The issue I have with the bolt-on kits is they typically lower the bus. I don't want that. Besides, for a fabricator like me, why PAY someone else to build something I can build for the cost of materials only?? Thanks for the info. I'll get it figured out. _________________ Regards,

Yes. Stock wheels and the CB/Empi park brake calipers and bug rear rotors fit. That is what I have on the Shawty. Its lowered, but the hub for the stock height kit is the same, just mounted in a different orientation.
