I did a search and could not really find what I am looking for. I have a problem with poor mileage and temp gauge not working. When I start my van the red light doesn't flash. I also noticed that I am getting about 10-12 mpg and at is a westy. I talked to a guy who has many vanagons and he said I may have the sensor plugs backwards.

Electrically, I cannot see why it would make any difference, the sensor in the coolant tank is just two long pins into the coolant, not a polarized item. The wires do get cut, melted and the connectors do corrode. How's your fuel gauge, if bad it can be the voltage regulator for the instruments.

Poor milage can be:
worn out O2 sensor
bad Temp II Sensor
Leaking Injectors
going bad Fuel Pressure Regulator
Low tire pressures
Worn plugs and wires

Well I replaced the sensor for the gauge and now it is working. I am still not getting the Red light when I turn on the van. Also where is the gauge supposed to read?

The sensor for the temp gauge is on the thermostat tower on the driver's side forward of the engine.

As to the where, from what I gather some where around the LED is fairly standard. Of course it will fluctuate with load, climate...etc. But it's always nice to see that needle sitting at or under the dot.

No blinking mean cluster problem, it's a self test.

Now start engine and unplug the sensor on the tank and see if the light stays ON, i may take 30 sec.

Ok well I went out and unplugged sensor on the tank and the light never came on. Also how much coolant should be in the tank? I am sorry I am new to Vanagons and want this thing to be right. Thanks in advance.

Hi, don't be sorry.

If you unplug the main connector on the EX tank (Expansion tank - the one in the engine compartment) and you start the van and the red blinking light don't blink... ever. You have a cluster problem OR a relay problem OR a wire problem.

First you need to remove the cluster! 4 screws and some connector, can you do it?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Now, in the back of that cluster you have many little 6mm nuts ( or 7mm maybe), you need to tight them up and re-test.

This is your first step.

Well I took the cluster off and I found that one of the little nuts that makes contact to the ribbon cable is missing. After investigation it looks like it is right behind the gauge light. Is it possible that this is the connection for the light to the circuit?
