I thought this was brought up in another thread, but I don't remember. Anyways, I just need to vent on something that still continues to make absolutely no sense.
Why do people continue to blur out, block out, or otherwise obscure their license plate number in for sale ads? Are they worried that someone will use the plate number to find out where they live? If I'm selling a $400 pile of non-running shit, I'm adding my street address and my work schedule to the ad so that everyone will know exactly when they can come over and steal the car.
Only people with access to DMV records can use a license plate number to get info on the cars owner. The rest of us don't give a crap. |

It's usually paranoid people that do that. I'ts like people who hide their identity but write you a check with their name, number, address, account number and even a copy of their signature, HA! once or twice you'll get and ID or Driver License number. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Had a 64 1/2 vert for sale and some guys that came and looked at it came back and stripped parts in the middle of the night. Lost most of the top hardware, decklid etc. Some people have access to licence information. |

No, actually a very limited number of people have access to the information attached to your license plate number.
Assuming that the people who looked at your car were also the ones who eventually stripped it, how would obscuring the plate number have prevented them from doing this? So you obscured your plate number in the ad. The thief calls you ostensibly to look at the car. You meet in a neutral location. The thief can now see your plate number, along with everyone else in public. You see where I'm going here? |

Awesome. This is the way it should work. But in order to get the info on this plate you called who? The police, correct? This kind of info is actually protected pretty well thanks to legislation going back to 1994. |

Friends can get you all the info you need from just a plate #, as in I ask my Bud who is a Fireman, who asks one of his Cop buddys, or my friend's wife that works at the DMV, done. _________________ Tom

True but at least here in AZ they are breaking the law if they do that.
I suspect that is true almost everywhere. _________________ How to Post Photos

There is an app for that. $15 a month. Currently used to identify people before towing their car, but it would be very easy to use this for the wrong reasons.

Because people are paranoid over everything. If someone wants to go through that much effort to find me then go for it. Come on over.

I just figure, why make it easy?
Also, all the data mining done by google, yahoo, and countless others you don't know about means info about you is being compiled, and not necessarily by the original data collector. That collection costs money (though it's not too expensive online with spiders, bots and such to grab emails, do face and license recognition on photos, etc), and they expect a return, eventually from your pocket. They are in business to make money, after all.
I don't like the idea of being profiled and targeted for sales or other more nefarious purposes. Anonymity is security. This helps in a small way. |

exactly....
it's bad enough that with a little leg work, we can find info on just about anyone....
I had some dude start taking pictures of the single cab while I was in line at dunkin 'donuts.
I HATE when people do that....so I took my phone, made sure the flash was on and took a picture of him. the guy got all indignant and started asking me what I was doing....
told him he was going on my website...assholepicturetaker.com. told him it was a site with pictures of people who took pictures of me/my cars.
the site doesn't exist (I think) but the look on his face was worth it. told him I have over 200 pic's of folks who I caught taking photos _________________

Oh no my license plate that's seen by thousands of people every single day from me driving around is on the internet. Now the boogie man is going to track me down and kick my door in.
I'm more worried about the people I flip off and cuss out on my daily commute following me home than some random person online going through the hassle of stopping by my house. _________________ 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition

Everywhere.
Driver's Privacy Protection Act, or DPPA signed into law Sept. 13 1994 prohibits the disclosure of personal information gathered by motor vehicle departments. The result is that the most information a person with your plate number could possibly get is the make and model of your vehicle. Not your name, not your address, not your date of birth. |

Even if someone wanted to get info from a plate number how do they know I didn't give the DMV a PO Box for my mailing address? Hell I don't even think the address on my pink slip or registration is my current address. The address on my drivers license is from 2 addresses ago. Like I said, if someone wants to go through the hassle of finding me based on a picture so they can steal or vandalize one of my insured vehicles then go for it. _________________ 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition

Post a picture of you standing in front of one of my cars then. Or better yet knock on the door. I'll even answer it unarmed.
Edit:
I see you added the ID theft part. If you want a the social security number of someone with a 480 score and a couple repos I'll PM my social. NOBODY is going to benifit from stealing my identity. _________________ 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg Edition
