I'm trying to set my idle on my 62 and when using an Actron CP7677 digital multimeter w/dwell and tach the tach is reading higher RPMs than it should. I checked the manual and it makes no mention of voltages. red lead is connected to (-) on coil and black lead is connected to ground on fan housing.

Lowest RPM before engine dies is ~1600 RPM. From what i can tell the engine is a 1200 from a 64 with a solex 30/31 pict carb and a 009 distributor. New plugs, new wires, new cap, new rotor. Points are in good shape and set to .016" gap. Plugs gapped at .028"

Do I need a 6v specific dwell/tach meter???

Just bought a new coil, going to see if it helps. Wierd thing is the coil is silver not blue, but is marked 6V.

Any ideas?

I use a digi multimeter to read RPM on my 6 volter but it clips onto the HT lead and takes its reading from there so the voltage difference isn't an issue.

I have never been able to get it get read dwell (or anything else for that matter) accurately by clipping onto the coil terminals, it wanders all over the place, blanks, flashes and generally throws a complete strop. I saw it mentioned somewhere that there's too much 'noise' in 6V electrics for digimeters to read properly, they can't distinguish the signal or something.

You might have more success with an analogue meter.

Just another one of the joys of 6V motoring Very Happy

Thanks, I'll try an analog meter.

I've never had trouble with my analog meter, even though it's 12v only.
