Hello everybody
Now i'm sure this question has been asked before but here goes anyway. Ok a friend of mine has a 1974 type 2 bay window with a 1600cc engine. It came with a twin choke webber that ran well but he wanted to upgrade and decided to go for the solex 35 pdsit carbs from aircool.com. He's fitted these and tried to set them up but he's having no luck what so ever. He can't get the bus to run properly at all it's not starting very well and it absoulutely stinks of fuel. He tells me that the carbs chuck in a large amount of fuel and having read the instructions that came with the carbs we were wondering wether the jetting is wrong in them as the manual mentions that there are options. I've come on here as he's not to good with computers and any help with how best to set these carbs up would be gratefully recieved. Please make it a clear as poss as i know nothing about carbs.
Thanks |

Do you mean aircooled.net. I bought a set from them. John set them up for the engine specs that I gave him. They worked perfectly out of the box. If that is where your friend bought them, did he choose the jet and setup option? John mentions on his site that they are improperly jetted as they come from Solex. It is very important to follow the instructions that come with them. They are very difficult to setup correctly without doing so. I had a credit with John and bought them just to see how they worked. I was running a recently AJ refreshed set of Kadrons that were working well. I like the 35PDSITs so well that they are still on the car.
If John didn't set them up, I would suggest your friend call him to get his jetting suggestions for his specific engine. John does customer service as well as anyone in the VW parts business. |

Yeah, call up acn and explain. Those are jetted way wrong out of the box, and you can buy them that way if you've got jets laying around and are using them in a special application. The setup and jet opt. was cheaper than buying jets for me, so thats how i got my set. They tuned easily and run great on my 1600. You need to check your fuel pressure FIRST before you tune anything, so start there. If you are running a stock 1600 you will be using either a 50-55 idle and a 145 main. Good luck! |

Not to hijack, but what venturis are you running with those 145 main jets? I think these carbs come stock with 27mm vents, and it seems that 145 mains are a little fat for those on a 1600 (that's just my observation -- I don't have personal experience with these carbs). Did you upgrade to the 30mm vents?
Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

Solex and weber jets run differently... With the 27 vents on a 1600, its a 99% chance 145 will be super close. I run 30 mm vents with ported heads, and 160 mains. The idles are what really matter for most driving, and i run 55's. |

Sounds like this guy's fuel pressure is too high. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Hmmm. I actually run a pair of dual Solex 34s and the 130 mains that it shipped with were very rich on my car. The vents are only 26 mm, but that's only 1 mm smaller than the vents on the stock 35 Solex. Of course, I'm running single port heads which makes a difference, but even so I would expect the jetting to be a little closer. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |
