Posted: Tue Feb 24, 2015 6:56 pm Post subject: Performance Exhaust without all the noise? |
|
|
I know there are various threads out there for the different performance exhaust systems available and what problem each of them have. I have sifted my way through most of those and am still confused and undecided as to what system I would get.
I have a 2110cc mild motor and want a good exhaust system like a 4 into 1 header. The sidewinder/python style of exhaust seems to be the best ground clearance , but most people have a complaint about the sound level of the Mondo exhaust. I found a picture of a sidewinder style exhaust that has two mufflers on it (posted it in the wrong thread, trying not to be a hijacker). This system seems like it would be quiet and still have all the advantages of a header system with good ground clearance.
So, does anyone know who makes this system? or, if you know of one that is quiet, powerful, and works on lowered Busses?
Thanks, Gordo. _________________ Everybody Dies....Some Never Live.

Sorry I can't help with a source, but adjusting the valves on that must be an absolute nightmare _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Yup it would be, but if I was to go to all the trouble to take it off to adjust the valves, I think I would run a stinger on it for a week , just to get my loudness fix and be happy to spend as much time as needed to put it back on.

I doubt if that would fit in a bus. The apron and the side frame rails would interfere. Looks like maybe it is intended for a Bug.
I bet A-1 either makes that or could make you one that fits in a Bus. Lotta plumbing, but it looks pretty trick. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I don't know about that, the top of the J-tubes are about 5" below the engine tin seal which puts them at least 1" below the frame. And the one muffler sits in the same orientation as the other.
The only difference I would like to see for a bus is the tail pipe turned out to the side more.Like this.

I would worry about head temps going up with a setup like that. _________________ Wash your hands

I think two of those mufflers would not help. You will still have that "drone". Any system that has a muffler under the body will be louder than one that has the muffler at the rear. Having the tail pipe exit from under the body does help. I cut my tail pipe off and flipped it 180 to point up, and added some pipe to get it to exit outside of the body. It made a big difference, but still has a "drone" to it.

That shot looks like there is more side clearance. But the nest at the rear of the engine looks pretty busy. There isn't a lot of room with the rear tin and the diagonal brace on the apron, but maybe. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I also have a 2110 in my daily driver bus. Noise reduction was one of my main requirements for an exhaust system, I ended up with the 1 1/2" Vintage speed setup. They have videos and post their dB outputs on their website, but it's kind of hard to gauge how loud something is listening on computer speakers.
I'm very happy with how quiet the muffler is compared to other options. |

That was a custom made exhaust made by a guy in the UK.
I think he only made a few to fund his hobby, so not sure if he's still making them.
Cheers, Daniel. |

Very nice. Is that your bus? did you buy the system from the UK guy? If so how does it sound?

My search has lead me down a different path, and perhaps some of you can straighten me out.
I saw a Sebring system for a 356, which look really cool.

and, sound comparison to stock 356.

I know you can't tell much listening on you computer , but it does sound like the sound smooths and mellows with revs.
I like the sound, and it has a less cluttered look although I'm sure I'll stub my shin a bunch.

Hey, not my bus, just a pic he sent me when I asked about one. Was going to be too much for shipping for me. If it had a few more connections to break it down it could be shipped a bit easier, and could help when doing valve adjustments.
Could still make one using the A1 header as a starting point. |

Gordo, I heard that adding a turbo is the best muffler that money can buy |

If you don't want a loud exhaust, don't point your mufflers at the ground.

You got my vote. I like this one a lot. _________________ and take the kids for instance "Are we going in the Volkswagen bus?" and they say "Yay!" and clap their hands and if it's a glorious day you can slide the sunroof back and let a little of the glory in and all of a sudden, it stops looking funny.

The Sebring's are cool, but they are in no way, shape, or form quiet. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

In person and driving one, they almost sound like a stinger with a good baffle. Yes, they are very loud, but in a good way _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

I'm building a type 4 two liter for my bus. I would love to have one of those sebrings. That thing sounds frickin bad ass! I will be using a combo of CSP J tubes and Vintage speed super flow exhaust. Will be much quieter. But will have to make a custom sebring one day. _________________ 53 Hatch Barndoor
