I had this idea for a while, and I had a roll of Tyvek Layin around, so I thought I would give it a try. It looks pretty good, and I think it will hold up pretty well as long as the edges where the staples and screws are get reinforced.
We cut 35 foot off the 9x100ft roll. I think 30 would have done it. First I folded over the top about 1 inch and started stapling it into the wood on the top. Went all around, then put on the metal that holds the canvas to the roof. Took some scissors and trimmed off the excess(which is plenty enough to make one more top).
Im going camping next week, so I'll get to see how it works.
Sun went down, so I dont have a finished pic yet, if yall are interested I will take one today if its not raining.

May get a little moist and sweaty in there, looking forward to your test report.

I am a huge fan of Tyvek, and I'm interested in seeing how this looks complete. You could sew a window or two in the sides and front pretty easy.

yeah, Im experimenting with using a clothes iron to bond it and might put in a vent at the top. It cost about 20 bucks and took all of about 3 hours. I think it will be good for the cool weather camping im about to do. I just hope I dont wake up in the middle of a storm because it rips apart. It is really strong durable stuff, and its all the rage with survivalists, and prepers.

I built a tent out of it when I hiked the Appalachian Trail, and it held up wonderfully, even after daily foldings for 3 months.

The lower aluminum bracket actually goes on the inside of the tent not the out side. I see lots of rain infiltrating those screw heads in that exposed track.

Do over!! Shocked

hmmm. my 78 is on the outside too, always worked great untill it ripped. must not be original. The doubled up Tyvek combined with the fabric tape I used should compress enough to make a water tight seal.

Ps, I would rather install a new windshield than redo a pop top =]

Pop top doesn't scare me, and yes I've done one. Windshields .. I'll take the old one out, I'll do the repair & prep work, and let the glass guy wrestle with the new one. That way if it breaks going in, not my problem. Laughing

These windshields are the easiest I have ever installed. All you need is about 14 feet of 16 or so gauge primary wire and a spray bottle full of soapy water. They actually just fall right in!
Grab a new plunger for good measure. Very Happy

Just got back from a camping trip. 2 guys and 3 dogs. It was the windiest camping conditions I've ever been in and it held up great. It does not breath at all, so the first night I woke up to a few rain drops coming off of the top, so I dried it off with a towel and cracked a smoker window, and a camper window, to get a little flow. It rained the whole three days and nights we were there and didnt spring one leak.
In short, it seems really durable but not one bit breathable. Fun experiment for minimum cost. Plus, nobody makes a white canvas one!

I dont think so, It says HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene), and Water/Air barrier. I'm pretty sure it breathes just like clear plastic sheeting, its just alot more durable.

TYVEK can be installed either way, it breaths the same, very little, just enough to let moisture out very slooooooowly :0)
