Hi,

It was time for me to replace the rear shocks of my DC.

After alot of research I've decided to go for the KYB gas-a-just (KG-5530)

Today I've installed the new shock and found out that they are too short!

I have to lift the rear wheel for about 3cm in order to install the shocks, and after I've installed them, the rear wheel assembly is resting on the shocks and not on the spring plate stopper when the car is lifted.

My concern is that the shocks will blow out. Am I right????

Should it be this way?

I just installed the exact same shocks in my '71 yesterday - no fitment issues. Mine were a different color though... kind of a goldish color...

That's strange... I have problem fitting the shocks on both sides.

Could DC have different suspention travel then regular bus ?

I've compared the KYG's to the original Sasch shocks that I've removed, The Sasch shocks are much longer. I'm sure now that I'm going to blow them!

No, my DC is all original. No modification at all. The Sachs shocks that I've replace have the VW sign and part number on them

Hmmm; maybe measure the shock when it is extended and call KYB?

If it's going to help any one solving my problem, here is a picture of the original shock that I've replaced:

Another fact that I've found out:

VW stantard extanded shock length : 585mm
KYB KG5530 extanded shock length: 558mm

The KYB is 27mm short!!!!! Why they sell it everywhere as a direct replacement?

freakin ebay. Mad i just bought a fuel level sender from there.. "genuine German" only to have the wrong part inside the box and have to argue with the seller cause "it wasn't his fault, his supplier must have packed it wrong"

best of luck getting squared up on your deal.

I don't think so... almost every vw online parts store sell those exact shocks.

http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_KYB-Gas-A-Just...try_GB.htm

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=KYB-KG5530

http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=KG5530

I just want to know where is the problem? my suspention or the shocks.

I lied - the gas-adjusts I put in were gunmetal/aluminum colored.

On the side of the box the label reads KG5530 then on the line below it reads 554060...

Does anyone know what color the shocks were from the factory in 1975?

This issue may have been discussed:

Very likely some models of KYB are too short.
