|
|
I bought this a while a go. https://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D043%2D905%2D205
And am now doing a full rebuild (new crank and cam) and have installed my Dist. but it looks like its 90* off. When Iinstalled it in my old engine a year ago, I think I remember having to move my spark plug wires back one to locate my #1 as #4 and my #2 as number 1. you know, move each plug wire counterclock wise one space on the cap.
has anyone heard of anything like that???
I have another thread going in hte engines related to over all timing (valve and Ignition) but Here I am mostly concerned with the dist. Itself, and any Isure anyone else has had.
Thanks a bunch.

sometimes it is somethjing to do with the distributor drive gear and whoever built the engine. I have heard of 180 out, but not 90. _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

I am building the engine and know that the drive gear is in correctly... Thats the thing, the dist is 90* out. If I line up the notch to the rotor, my vacume can is on the fuel pump.
I think I might just move the drive gear so the vacume can is where I want it to be astedicly.
Can I do that?

you can put 1 wherever you want to - There is nothing magical about the little groove on the distributor. file another one in it at the new location and shift the plug wires one hole. Did that on the buggy and it hasn't burst into flames or anything LOL. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone 1914. Ex wifes car.

I looked at the CIP1 site agan, and it said that my Dist. could be used in 72 and later bus and van engines as well.
So I refrenced that with my Rebuild Guide and For a bus engine the Drive gear is rotated almost 90* different than a bug engine and would explaine the 90* off I keep seeing.
So I just have to rotate the Drive Gear and slap'r in!!!
Thanks everyone, It all makes sense now!!!

In fact you can drop the gear in any postion as some wanna be mechs do......... Most of you are too young to know but 1200s had a cut out which only allowed going in one way, this disappeared with 1300s and up, you can use the early gear in the later engine or the later gear in the early engine makes no difference.....
Type 3s gear is installed differently so as not to interfere with the cooling fan housing... You can switch the dog offset gear on the distributor by removing the wire spring and tapping out the pin and then relocate the dog 180 out ..........
If you are one of the few that has the right tool called a dist drive gear puller you could just relocate the drive gear to correct position for that engine application ....... Type 1s fat side of offset faces fan shroud and gear goes in at about 10.30 because of helical cut it will rotate to about 11.30 or 12 and be per the manual.... It is mandatory to remove the fuel pump as the rod holds the drive gear down...... Don't laugh this is common mistake..

I have the case split, and I am building the engine. The thing I found out yesterday is that my Dist. can also me a replacement for a type 4 and The dist. drive gear goes in a different way for a type 4.
So, if I put the Dist Drive in according to how a type 4 is supposed to be, then everything lines up!
I do think its wierd that CIP1 sells a dist for a type one that in the small print mentions that is is for a 72 orlater bus and type 4 application.
But none the less I got it figured out.
Thanks all.
