Just wanted to let all of the Thing fans know that there will be a Thing for sale at the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale, AZ later this month. I built the car in 2001 - 2002 and drove it and showed it through the 2002 year, and sold it to the current owner / collector towards the end of 2002. The car is lot # 348 and will be on the block on Thursday January 27th. I don't know if it will be televised because it's fairly early in the day, but I will post pictures once I return. Here is a link if anyone is interested.

The car sold this afternoon at the auction with much "hoopla" once it hit the stage! There was a bigger crowd around it than any other of the 47 cars that went before it. The bidding STARTED at $10K.......and quickly rose, ending at a record amount of $36,000 !!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked
Even though I don't own the car anymore (sold it two years ago to the seller who has kept it in lock-down) it makes me very proud of how much detail I put into it, and how nice it turned out. This should make all of you happy to know you own such cool, unique car that will demand a nice price if finished the right way. Very Happy Regards,

Darrell

Anybody watch the Speed channel over the weekend? They covered the auction for 9 hours straight, and also have a show that will focus on several of the individual cars. I dodn't catch the Thing's sale- I watched when I could, but couldn't devote the whole nine hours. Anyone see or tape the Thing on the show?

I don't know if the Thing made it to TV because I was there watching while it happened. I did take a couple of photos while it was on the block, but there were so many people around it, a clean shot was difficult to get. I posted four photos in the Gallery if you want to check it out.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "I will never part with my 181."

But $36K?! That figure almost makes me want to eat my words!

... but almost doesn't cut it!

I'll be interested to see how much the four other Thingies go up for, expecially that radical pick-up!

From what I gather of B-J, folks bring a TON of money with them, and intend to drop it on SOMETHING. Fun to watch, but if you have a POS $1000 Thing, I don't expect it to help you sell that. Wink

The Thing listed here,
http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=913
states in the online ad copy "This rare 1973 Thing is a complete body off, ground up restoration by Larry Dustmann of The Thing Shop, the largest Thing parts supplier in the world."

It's my understanding Vince Sadowski (former owner of Things Unlimited, pre Mike Basso) did much of the work on the vehicle.

"The orange 73 that I assembled for Larry of The Thing Shop last winter is
going up for auction Friday AM at Barrett-Jackson. There a 3 more Things in the
auction this year. It will be interesting to see what they bring.
Out here in AZ for the winter. Thinking of putting a Beetle baja body on a
Thing chassis so I can ride in the desert.
Seems that I can't stay away from VW's. Vince"
http://lists.topica.com/lists/things/read/message.html?mid=812576090&sort=d&start=32862

So what we have here is a Thing for sale at the most prestigious auto auction in the country, actually built by one of the most knowledgeable and respected Thing experts in the USA.

I herd people will buy cars from themselves in this auction attempting to establish a market and price for a car for a dealer that has already agreed to buy it @ a much lower price later.

The dealer later then sells the car to a customer who thinks he is getting a great deal because the dealer says, look what it brang @ auction and I'm so hard up I'm selling it to you for 10% less than the auction price.

Another words the whole thing is a dog and pony show.

I also herd there are legitimate sales mixed in so it's not so obvious, whitch this Thing could very well be.

From the previous poster "I also herd there are ligament sales mixed in so it's not so obvious, whitch this Thing could very well be"

If I knew there were Ligament sales I would go - I may need a new anterior cruciate ligament for my knee in a few years from playing too much hockey

Sorry - no offense, couldn't resist - for the record its "legitimate"

How do you know? Actually all sales @ actions are claimed to be legitimate, however because of varies reasons, (most have to do with taxes), they may not reflect the actual value of the item very well. Like I sad lots off times cash kickbacks are involved—especially in collectibles like art. If you don't think this is ever true ask your neighborhood IRS man.

Anyway if you have D Baker restore your Thing, I don't think you will even get half of 36K for it. Some Things just sound to good to be true—excuse the pun.

Thanks for being a better spell checker—I better watch what it tries to do.

Wow I would have guessed 20K would have been about the max possible.

I guess I'll have to fix mine up and auction her off Laughing

One around here that I swear looked brand new went for 6K.

You can buy a nice 21 window split window bus for 29K and these are the most expensive aircooled vws I ever see @ local shows.

Why do you think they bring 29-36 K?

just wait till the 23 window bus goes across the block...
there was a 65 single cab that went for 90,000 last year, i bet the 23 window gets close if not breaks the 100,000 mark

The 23-window already went for around $40K according to
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=214311

The Green '65 Truck last year went for $46K according to a search on the BJ web site.

Why do you all think the ones @ barret jackson cost so much more? Are they just that much better. I Am interested in your opinion.

However 40K for 23 window, seems more reasnoble than 30K for a Thing.
