David Orozco's '53 Zwitter has one in it. Check out page 62 in the July 2006 issue of Hot VWs.

Looks just like the Empi sport shifter for 1968-later beetles. But the shaft cover is solid (no holes) and is designed for use on the 1950-55 thinner shafted shifters. Basically, it has a round washer just under the shift knob to act as a handle when you depress the shifter to select reverse gear.

I haven't seen that particular "model" before. It is not the one referred to in the previous posts.

It is not mine, It was offered to me for sale.

Yesterday, I bought some ghia parts from a local guy here and he offered me this shifter as well as some other rare (oval) parts. (double mirror, empi bumperbars, a mirror that you can clamb on your door, VDO tachometer for oval, oval convertible deck lid). I didn't bought any of it, since I am only interested in ghia parts.

I have a lowlight ghia with Okrasa engine and he said the shifter was an period correct option from Okrasa. I told him that I first wanted to find out if this shifter was indeed what he said it was and if it was a period correct option in 1958 for a ghia

I found this picture on page four of this topic http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=292110&start=60

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So now I know it is a Oettinger reverse lock out.

But than the usual question, What is it worth? and was this shifter also offered for the ghia

Those are VERY rare. I have seen three......well, four with this one. It's missing the plate, but you could make one. What it's worth is a good question. Hard to say being they never go up for sale.

What is the RPM range on that tach?

I think it's missing more than the plate. Confused

You remove the shifter off the center tunnel.
Remove the knob on the stock shifter.
Slide the Oettinger over the stock shifter shaft
Replace the base of the shifter
Reinstall the knob
Bolt down the complete assembly to the tunnel

Not bad Glenn, but not quite right.

"Reverse lock out Schaltfix

1. Take off shift knob (1).
2. Take off bolts (9).
3. Pull shift lever (5) out of rubber boot (6) and collar (7).
4. Insert shift lever (5) in “Schaltfix”-tube (4)
5. Insert shift lever (5) and tube (4) in shift collar (7).
6. Put washer (10) on top of lockout plate (12) and base (11). Spring (8 ) MUST clear the hole of washer (10) and NOT be on top of the washer.
7. Attach shift collar (7) using bolts (9).
8. Screw knob (2) onto on to tube (4). Felt ring (3) must not get damaged by threads of shift lever (5).
9. Screw on shift knob (1)."

It is missing the plate, nothing else. Wink

I was intented to buy it for my okrasa powered oldspeed ghia, but the shifter was sold for €220 during my vacation.

Was that a reasonable prize for this??

Like the saying goes.......... you snooze ya lose.
I would bet either Bob or Glenn bought it. Wink

You really have two choices for any rare accessory. You could wait for someone who doesn't know the value and hope to be the first to grab it, or you pay top dollar to someone who does know the value. It's a matter of how bad you want it.

BTW, someone would have to give me a ridiculous amount of cash for me to part with mine.

Nope, not me Sad

What's considered "a ridiculous amount of cash" these days?

$100 these days. It's equivalent to what $1000 was 7 months ago.
