|
|
When I bought my 71 Super, the sunroof was siliconed shut, and it was missing all the seals. It came with two new felt seals for it, and I have the rubber seal on order. But none of the manuals I have show a decent picture of where they go.
Is this the basic location of where the felt seals go? Or do they go somewhere on the roof of the car? Do you just use contact cement to hold them in place?
If anyone has any pictures of how they are supposed to go, I would love to see them.
Thanks

If i'm not mistaken, they go on the body opening judging by the picture in my VW official service manual which is a must have for anyone working on these cars plus I went to Wolfsburg West web site:
There is the seal you have and it looks like it mounts on the body.
My 73 sb is a whole different animal. Those seals go one the metal roof. _________________ '73 SB

The felt seals go on the body. The short one goes on the rear of the opening and will cover the back corners. The longer one goes on the front 3/4 of the opening. When you get the rubber seal it will go on the top/back of the sunroof where it steps down, with the narrow point of the wedge facing into the center of the sunroof. Make sure you use good weatherstrip adhesive. _________________ 69 Beetle

Finally got my cable issue figured out.... some dummy ... namely me, made the twist of the cables the opposite of what they needed to be to fit the plastic ramps correctly. Now it all slides pretty smoothly.
Anyhow I understand where the felt seals go, but am still not positive about the rubber seal. If you were to cut the seal in half right in the middle it would look something like this. I am guessing it goes like it is drawn (the circle at top is the felt seal, and the right side where the text is would get glued to the side of the step down.
It also seems possible it could go with the left side against the metal instead, but it doesn't seem to fit as good. Not sure what you mean by the narrow point of the wedge.
Thanks for any help, I would hate to glue this thing on wrong as expensive as it is.

From your drawing, it doesn't look like the one I put in my 69. Does it taper down on the ends? Mine had a taper to the ends and I was able to lay it in place and figure out how it sat. I would think the widest surface would glue down to the top of the sunroof at the lower part of the step near the back of the top.
Hope this helps. _________________ 69 Beetle

Thanks Blarneyman
Yes, it tapers on the ends, and the sharp point on the bottom right only runs for a few inches in the middle and then it dissapears. There is a groove in the sunroof that kind of matches, it, but when I mate those up it fits the worst. I guess I will just go with the way that looks the most logical to me.
I just hate the thought of gluing it on, then having it leak and finding out I glued it on wrong.
Thanks... wish me luck |

After you get past the center section is it more like a "V" the rest of the seal? If so, the base of the "V" should be closest to the front of the panel by the base of the step. At least that's the way it seamed to fit best for me. _________________ 69 Beetle
