the 4 tab stoped mid 61 so yes your car could be correct with a 4 tab |

There's 4 slots for the VW emblem to mount to the hood. Also it's flat in that area, later hoods had a raised circle where the emblem mounts. _________________ Evan H.

Late 1961-early '63 hoods still featured the flat plinth area, but the hood emblem was now a 3-pin style. |

Is it possible to have a 62 3 tab hood that has a raised area for the emblem? |

No, what RareAir posted is the correct info. You should have a three-hole hood without the raised section. The emblem that goes on it is actually the 4-tab style emblem but with a plastic insert with the three pins. _________________ Evan H.

No they don't sell the insert separately, not that I've ever seen at least.
Actually someone makes, or at least, used to make, at mid 61-early 63 smaller emblem in a "solid" style, I bought one at a swap meet a few years ago:
(Also, in a pinch, if you modify one of the three mounting holes, you can make a type 3 emblem work on there.)
