i have what i believe is a vwoa roof rack.
the bars that are attached to the feet bow down when attached to the rain gutters.
it fits great in the front but the rest is a bit tight. is this even a vwoa roof rack and if so is it supposed to fit this way?
i was thinking about cutting the welds and rewedding it.

I looked through two pages of the thread included below and did not see the one you have. I will keep looking.

Edit: I am going to go with it is not VWoA. Due to the fact that the legs are not one piece of steel all the way to the top of the rack and the front and back bar ends (that run the length of the bus) they all should be curved.

I figured it is not a bay window VWoA rack. So I searched to see what the early split VWoA racks looked like, to see if it was one of those, and found out they were called HWE.

The one in the picture is definitely not an HWE rack by Volkswagen of America as they have major curved ends. Check out the thread as its a fun read.

Any racksperts know for sure?

I have an (allegedly) voa rack and it has no "struts" and has completely different clamps. Will try to get pics up after sunrise.

If mine is not an vwoa rack maybe some one can identify it - Thanks.

(It was a tight fit also.)

Try page 19. It is VWAG.

I have had roof rack envy for many years, and finally found one. I hope some of this info. helps others who have posted up here and are wondering what kind of rack they have.

The one pictured below I just bought from the original owner who bought it new in 1966 from a Massachusetts VW dealer. He used it on his '66 Split until the engine blew, then bought a baywindow where he used it on that bus. He considers himself somewhat of a "packrat" and decided to hang it up away from things in his garage. He hung it up in 1978, and that is where it sat until this past Sat. when I went to look at it. Needless to say, I bought it within the first minute of seeing it. All OG, included the 6 rack holders as well. Amazingly it has three original VW stickers on it, including the VW part number. He also said when he bought it, the full length one's were a bit harder to come by. The best part of it all, he sold it to me for what he bought it for in 1966.

Try page 19. It is VAG.

Thanks for the info and for putting in the leg work. Now I have another item to buy if I see it.

The rack is bowed because the VWoA racks are the wimpiest racks you can get for bus besides a wood slat.

Again, the racks in question are VWAG not VWOA.

Definitely not homemade. Have found enough of them over the decades.

That looks like a rack that I have. Bought it in Alaska too. I was told it was homemade. It also fits poorly, slightly too narrow and very thin wall tubing. There are no labels or stampings.

You have same style rack from VWAG.

"VWoAK", I like it.

The panel is gone and it's actually pretty sad. It was a part of Fairbanks history delivering potatoes grown on a homestead. Got a very cool new owner though.

The rack will be back sometime next year. It will be attached to a bus I'm "importing" along with some parts. So, I guess it goes both ways. Very Happy

Try page 19. It is VWAG.

As in VW/Audi Group? Shouldn't that just be VAG? (or is just that just the term within the Audi group?)

I'm glad someone answered here, I posted the question of what these racks are in that rack thread, but no one had the answer. On page 19, even with the story, unless I missed it, says it was bought at the dealer in '66, but doesn't specify the rack brand, and the sticker doesn't specifically say VAG or VWAG. I have this 1/2 rack on my bus...

I was thinking the same thing and that someone should update the 'King of all Racks' thread with this new info. Preferably near the top of the thread where it list the types - VAG could be added (see page 19). That would make it clearer.

Eric&Barb can't be everywhere at once, ya know?

Yes, wish there was a way to easily separate the info in posts like the rack and camper ID.

As for VAG or VWAG either seem to be used on the internet by VW, though VWAG is now used by VW more often. First posted it as VAG but decided to edit to VWAG for any newbie out there.

It is a process of elemination. The rack on page 19 has a VW dealer paper tag glued to it, so that means it is not homemade.
It has a weight rating tag on it in German and English. Plus the VORN tag in German means front. Have yet to see a documented VWOA item made in USA with both German and English on the tag. On other hand have seen plenty of German products with English/German tags/instructions.

Sure the rack was possibly sold thru VWOA, but have yet to see any accessory VWOA info with it in there. Either way it is a German built item for VAG.
