|
|
I can't put my new Westy's sink to use because the water tank leaks. I'm thinking about getting a replacement, but it seems like it might be a bit of a pain (because of the tight space and hooking up the pump, etc.).
Anybody out there replaced their tanks? How much of a hassle was it? I am lazy and will do without for now if I have to. _________________ '76 Westy Weekender- "Fran" |

I had to remove the cabinet and take the tank out from the back. I tried it out thru the front, without removing the cabinet, but the tank was too long.
Make sure the filler piece that goes thru the cabinet top into the tank can be removed in one piece. Mine was stuck in there tight. _________________ Steve

What's the tank look like? You might find one that's close at an RV parts dept. |

A lil off topic, but my Dad thought that replacing the water tank with a pony keg and then the sink would be a beer tap. Thought it was a good idea in a way! _________________ 1989 VW White Star

The tank is removable from the front, the pump and drain valve thread out and the cabinet panels in front of it are removable. Take it out and inspect it, you may be able to repair it with a PVC epoxy. |

as long as it fits in the space,
I would remove the icebox while Im at it and just insulate the area to keep things cold. You could pack dry ice pellets around the keg to keep it chilled, they last awhile. Id be down for soing something like this if I found another combo cabinet for cheap. |

Seriously looking at an underbelly tank (about 18 gallons) to replace the (5 gallon?) factory unit, and possibly even an 'on board' grey water tank, also 'basement' mounted.
Main reasons (personally) to go below (mounted between frame rails) are to lower the Westy's center of gravity (for less sway in corners) and to make more camping room inside. Will work up an outside water tank input port, also more convenient than running a hose inside to fill the factory tank. The RV industry has a wide variety of sizes & shapes available. Most are baffled to prevent water from rapidly shifting from back & forth inside the tank.
Just seems like it will make improvements to our unit. YMMV

Very cool idea IMHO. Please keep us posted and show some pics, if you decide to go ahead with this. _________________ 1978 7-Passenger, 37K miles

I am not sure about later model Westies but Inca Plastics made the original plastic tanks for VW"s. Here is the thread about the replacement for my '67. I bet they have the later tanks as well.

Wouldn't that be really heavy? A gallon of water weighs 8.35 pounds, so you're looking at more than 150 pounds just for water. That's like hauling around an extra person. Besides, filling up the factory tank (7 gallons) every day or two isn't really that big of a chore. Just my $.02. _________________ ----------

There have been a few trips where having an extra 10 gallons of known potable water was helpful or even necessary. The tank doesn't have to be filled all the time, and not needing to have separate 5 gallon storage containers to pack would be nice. Many of us put those jerry cans up in the roof-mounted storage racks(BTDT), and that adds to the sway of the bay. IMHO the handling characteristics just aren't as big an issue for some folks as for others. It IS a personal trade-off thing, like most modifications, or even the decision to leave a vehicle bone stock OG.

are you certain it's the tank leaking and not where the pump screws into tank? did you try rewrapping the pump with some teflon and snugging it back in? in 15 years i've never seen one of these tanks leak.

I'm actually travelling right now (via plane, not bus), so I'm just gathering info. I think I will be replacing the tank no matter what, as I'd forgotten I found lots of "stuff" in the tank- assorted debris and garbage with who knows what sorts of cooties attached. What are things like plastic forks doing in the tank??? Beats me, but I'm gonna start with a clean slate. _________________ '76 Westy Weekender- "Fran" |

If you are worried about cooties, you may want to drive something other than a former hippie's mobile, screw, sleep, smoke, eat, live, surf den.
Just a thought. |
