You may get lucky and they removed the front brake internals but if they're stuck then maybe take a big brake drum puller to remove the drums and release the brake internals up front (and maybe on the Stude rear drums too?)

You have a steering wheel which is really good but did the arms underneath look all connected? If not plan bring some track rods to keep the front somewhat pointed the same way.

Do you think that big tree limb will allow enough vertical movement to get wheels under? Maybe you could skid it on the plywood with a tractor pull and then put the wheels on?

Awesome rescue

Good call! Thanks I'll add it to the list.

Dude, I am so excited about this bus. I have way too many projects already, but this is once in a lifetime.

We turned the steering wheel and it wiggled the drums, so we should be good there. I would be shocked if the drums are empty- most likely they're seized solid. Good call on the puller, thanks!

Yeah that limb is a problem. I'd rather not cut that limb off and leave a hole in the tree, but we may have to. After we get the bus out, I'll spend some time cleaning that area up of course.

Rule #1- Don't post pictures of a find online until it is in your driveway. Get yourself back out there ASAP and get this home before someone snakes you.

Looks like a great find, congratulations. Once you jack it up and put wheels on it, it will drag out easy even if the wheels aren't turning.

Once you break it out of dry dirt, it will slide out with a good tow strap. No chains please. You won’t do any more damage pulling it out, if the frame folds from that, it was past economical repair already

Find out what the county charges to dump all those scrap tires and offer that labor to do it. It may be a better offer than cash Think

Duly noted. I've heard wild stories in the bus community about folks getting swooped on their finds. I'm lucky it's still there, no joke. It's been over 10 years since I first posted about it. Shocked

ALL OVER the whole bus. I can't wait to get it all pressure washed. I had one rat basically jump over my back while I was cleaning out the cargo area. There was a whole coffee can full of turds in the engine compartment. Why would the rats climb into a coffee can to poop?

That's an excellent point. If this bus proves to have too much rot in the frame rails, it will be beyond my capabilities. Do you think it'll make a big difference to use straps instead of chains? Is that just for safety in case a chain breaks, or is it more about the straps being a bit softer on the metal?

We actually talked about that! There are so many tires around there- I think the property owner was taking them from people to dispose of for money for decades, and stacking them on that hillside. It's near a cliff with a beautiful river below. There's probably hundreds of tires all along the hillside and river bed. It'd be a major undertaking to remove them all. But the property would be so much better for it.

You can reach thru the lug bolt holes in the drums to reach the spines of the brake shoes with a long punch or other rod and hammer a few times to get the shoes to easily pop loose.

However, that doesn’t always work. After 45+ years sitting in the same spot, the brakes on mine were fused.

And finally extracted the left rear drum.

Yeah, that’s ugly.

GEEZE, That's some serious wear on that drum! The shoe must have been grabbing that lip something fierce... I'm surprised you got it off!
