|
|
Hi all! I'm looking for a spline adapter to put an older style 21mm (fine spline) wheel on a newer 18mm (fine spline) steering column. It looks like there are adapters for small to large, but not small to medium.
Searching the forum, I found #191419514A, but it looks like it is to use a 74+ wheel on a pre-59 column, going from 18mm to the larger 25mm size.
Does anything exist for 18mm steering column to a 21mm wheel? Am I missing something?

Steering wheel splines
If you search the forum there is a lot about steering wheel and column spline sizes:
25mm diameter course spline on 1949 to 59 cars.
21mm diameter fine spline on 1960 to 73 cars with 27mm nut.
18mm diameter fine spline on 1974 on cars with 24mm nut. |

18mm to 21mm is just 3mm. It will be very thin and possible not hold up very long.
Perhaps if it's done in some very strong materials.
I wouldn't like to drive around in something where the steering may stop working at the next sharp turn.
Perhaps if it's made like two parts where the sleeve on the column and the new splined part sticks out and are sufficiently reinforced. But it will make the steering wheel stick out further towards the driver. |

The directional and wiper arms might hit the wheel. _________________ Glenn

| The 18 shaft ends in a taper while the 21 ends with a shoulder. |

21mm diameter fine spline on 1960 to Mid-74 cars with 27mm nut.

The change from M18 nut to M16 happened at car 1x4 2353 465. This is around Nov 29, 1973, so about 1/3 of the 1974 cars had the early spline and M18 nut. _________________
