I want to remove and restore the plate below the front pulley while I have the engine out of the car, and to do so I need to first remove the pulley. Would it be safe to remove the front pulley bolt with a pneumatic impact wrench? Or should I get a flywheel lock and remove it gently with a breaker bar instead? This is a really sweet-running engine, and I don't want to do anything that would upset the homeostasis of its crankshaft, rod or main bearings. Thank you. |

There's nothing special about removing the lower pulley nut, but be very careful if thinking of using a vw type puller to remove the pulley itself. The 356 pulleys are cast iron, and relatively brittle, compared tot he stamped steel welded, resilient vw pulleys. I've seen more than one 356 pulley with a chipped lip. My guess is Porsche had a a special tool that used the factory holes as a means of pulling. _________________ 2-time NASA Pro Racing Champion, Bonneville 130 Club and 150 Club Memeber, BRS Pro Gas racer |

Put a socket on it and smack it to the left (it's not torqued up that high) and use a rubber hammer and gently tap it off (it's a slip fit). |
