|
|
I have a 1985 Vanagon camper that started to buck and die; it was acting like a clogged fuel line. I replaced the fuel filters and pump- no change.
I checked for spark- it is there
I noticed the wires going into the distributor were not good, nor was the plug, so I replaced the Hall sending unit, and now it will not start at all.
I tested the ECU with a multimeter as per the Bently manual and I am including the picture of those pages with the results I got, but I do not know where to go from here.
Any and all suggestions will be helpful

First thing I’d do is load test the battery for cold cranking amps.
— If label says, say, “650 CCA,” it shouldn’t be much below that
— Voltage means very little compared to CCA
— If you can get ‘er fired, test alternator voltage vs. battery voltage
— Ask if not sure how, there’s no shame in that
In my opinion, the ECUs are pretty rugged. Never had one fail. You may be starting off with a low-failure-percentage factor.
Is the spark big and bold, or like a Bic out of fluid?
Have you checked all the connectors from the coil?
— unplug each, clean with wire brush, any loose female spades can be slightly crimped tighter with a side cutter or pliars
Any chance the tiny wires aren’t crimped under the distributor cap?
— Had this happen, same symptoms are yours
Any chance you loosened and moved the distributor, even slightly?
Any chance the cap’s not in the exact right spot, or not clamped down tight, or caddywompously unflush atop the distributor?
Rotor pushed on firmly?
Unless re-assembly was amiss, I suspect the bucking issue is still there. You might look at all the battery connections, a cracked wire terminal might exist. You might also look for a torn or damaged engine ground, too.

Test the fuel pressure and then the fuel delivery as per the manual.
There are specific procedures given for each of these tests.

3.2 volts would not be enough for the ECU to function and I would think it would barely be cranking as well. |
