How is the type 3 part attached to the tank? And the type1? Are they welded or brazed? |

Type 1 after you take off the fuel reserve tap just screws on. Contact Marty Staggs he is here on the samba. Here is his web page http://www.M-Specmotorsports.com
He can proably help you out with a Type 3 fitting also |

Do I understand you correctly:
the male part that sticks out of the tank is screwed in? (left hand thread?)
And then the fuel reserve tap screws on to that again? |

No it is actually part of the tank itself. I just bought an AN adaptor to contact my new braided line to. Here is a part number at www.jegs.com
JEGS #555-100222
This part screws right to the bottom of the tank. This one is just an example of what the part looks like Marty has the correct threaded one for an oval tank |

Do anyone know where to get an M18x1.0 die? I have looked, but not found anything. |

Just found this post:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=300050&highlight=m18
Where it claims to be a M18 x 1.5 thread. Here it is said to be M18 x 1.0
Do anyone know if the thread type changed over the years and when, and also is it left of right hand thread? I don`t have the tank here with me, so can`t check before I buy a tap. |

I think it is left on either the crane, or the tank. Probably the crane?
The nut is links in one end, and recht in the other. _________________ I got a historic car, every scratch got a history...

Old post, but while I was measuring, I thought I would share:
Looking at an early 1955 tank, the threads on the tank are M18 x 1.0 pitch right hand.
The fuel tap that attaches to it has the same size and pitch but the threads on the tap are left hand. |

Quick question..I noticed this weekend that the fuel tap seemed to be slightly leaking so, I proceeded to remove the tank & tap (been in there since I purchased) and found the threads to be bunged up. Any thoughts on if these can be salvaged or am I up a creek and need to search for tank?
Thanks. _________________ Even YOU can prevent FIRES!

Hey Mud
Pretty sure you can clean those up.
If you don't have a metric thread file - well, go buy one - OR just use a small triangular file and judiciously go round and round with it and I bet you can clean those up to a point where they will hold fast.
Make sure to use new gaskets on top and bottom of the screen when you reassemble. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Thanks, I ordered up a Die and took my time to get the threads lined and looks like it worked out well. Threaded on the petcock and it's sitting over a container with gas to look for leaks. I did find a nice used tank that i picked up..just for the spare in case. _________________ Even YOU can prevent FIRES!
