Rabbit S

I don't recall seeing a Rabbit S in western Canada but there may have been one or two around. The GTIs were pretty rare too. I do believe we got the German built Rabbits right up to '80. I had an '81 turbo diesel made in the USA. The interior was total junk compared to the German ones! Really cheap and deteriorated quickly! Cardboard headliner with a fuzzy velour finish, cheap door cards etc.

Oh and by the way the 1500 engine is pretty rare in Canada. All the water pumpers that I saw or owned here were all 1600s right from the '73 Audi Fox, '74 Dasher, '75 Rabbit and Sirocco. In '78 the Plymouth Horizon and Dodge Omni got the VW engine in a 1700 cc configuration. It had a longer stroke.

The only 1500 I saw was a '75 Sirocco someone brought from Europe. It had a single Solex 34 PICT nearly identical to the Beetle whereas the water pumpers sold here in '75 and '76 had a two barrel progressive Solex/Zenith carb.

I know of one in BC that has a 16V w/ g60 charger on it. That's all I know of...
