Crotch cooler question ?

i been cleaning and de rusting all my crotch cooler parts n screws in citric acid and then wire brush em ......as the rust is almost gone now im seeing remnants black paint on both screens .... were the screens original black ? i see some new repo screens sold today have some kind of rust preventative plating on em making em kind of shiny ........im just trying to understand how they were originally ? im thinking black ? ? ?

the black remnants of paint are on the outer frames here . i just dont think shiny is what is what id like to see there ?
