WOW. These are the ones I'm after — where you can almost teleport yourself back to that location. Sometime in the late 80's my friends and I took a big adventure out west, and I always remember this Beetle in the parking lot at Devil's Tower. Even that recently, the roads and signs and everything were just a little different from now. |

Yes, that’s so sad to see. |

Ok, here's some background...
#3 was built by "Team Nürburgring" club members as a fun and show car back in the late 70s or early 80s IIRC.
They used a Bug that was too rotted to pass vehicle inspection (TÜV). Their "Baja conversion" was in no way
street legal over here in Germany.
The Bug was mainly used for parades and events. I remember the car from when I was a teen.
Back in 1990 I was in need of a spare engine and my neighbor - a Team Nürburgring club member - said
"hey we have a 1300 VW AC engine laying around, you can have it".
So I picked it up and learned that it was the engine from the already scrapped #3 Bug.
It served my orange '72 Sparkäfer for over four years until the end of 1994.
Even on my current 1302 I reused the generator pulley thrust spacer of this engine.
There are other #3 engine leftovers in the hoard - I always keep good OEM parts.
Back in 2018 my neighbor and I chatted about the history of #3 for some reason.
He came up with the pics of intact #3 I posted above.
At that time we had no idea of the existence of the scrapyard pics.
A few weeks later while browsing my photo archive I stumbled across some pics showing scrapyards and scrapped Bugs.
These were random pics taken by my dad back in the early 90s.
Took a closer look at one of these pics... Hmmmm... Wait a minute... Hey that's #3!
So here you go - that scrapyard pic of #3 arose by a fluke. |

That’s a really satisfying conclusion and a quasi-happy ending. Thank you for going to the time of unfolding the events for us. I like that the most was made out of a rotted frame as was possible. Good efforts! |

I also want to say thanks to Maddel for providing the end of an interesting Beetle story. _________________ 1956 Beetle Ragtop: My Father's car
