I have the pierberg fuel pump with the square head.
I rebuilt ,put the preload to 14 mm and now the pump doesn t give any fuel.
When i blow in the inlet it is stuck ,no air coming out .
Is this normal?
When i put the pump on the jig with 14 mm preload I still can t get air flowing.
Perhaps the outlet valve is kaput?
Is there a way to test?
The inlet valve seems to open.
When I rebuit the pump she was rather clean inside .

thanks

After rebuilding, you need to bleed it on the bench. Otherwise you'll have to do a lot of cranking. Press on the lever until the pump sucks in and pushes out fuel. If it doesn't do it, something went wrong in assembly.

I don't know if you can blow in the inlet and have fuel come out, I think you have to pump it.

I usually work it with my finger and can hear it pumping.

As scarabee said, a couple times I had to manually pump fuel with it, then it started working immediately

when i put it on the car and cranked afterwards when I opened it the pump was full of fuel so the inlet part must be ok.

That is normal, for the Pierburg "square-top" pump. It has a fuel cutoff valve inside it that will prevent flow through the pump when it is not operating. Other Pierburg pumps can usually be blown through, because the in and out check valves are featherlight.

Fill the carb float chamber to get the engine running, that will give even a dry pump enough get up and go to suck up the fuel to it. Anyone can cut up a plastic fuel filter to make it into a fuel proof funnel that can then connect to the hose going into the carb to fill it.

still wrestling with that pump.

As I am almost sure the intake is ok and the pump sucks fuel, I hear the well know sound when pushing with my finger, I took the outlet valve out.

All there was is a round black thing and the round metal ring where it sits in.
Is that a valve??? No spring no nothing.
Could this be the problem?

The outlet valve in that pump consists of:

1. An aluminum seat that's lightly pressed into the pump and held in place by staking of the metal (usually at 3 places) at the rim.

2. A round disk make of plastic/bakelite.

3. An extremely light coil spring that holds the disk against the seat.
Needless to say, the pump will not work without that little spring.

I don't know where you could find a replacement. Wolfburg West used to sell a pump rebuild kit with bogus diaphragm assemblies and bogus outlet valve components, none of which fit or worked in the stock VW/Pierburg pumps. WW now sells the correct diaphrams, and I've heard their latest kits have that good diaphragm, but I don't know whether they've improved the other parts in that kit.
