New to the sandrail world. I picked this up about a year ago as a project. I was told it's a 73'. I bought the rail non running with a D15B mini me ( non vtec block with a vtec head) mounted and mostly completed. I was told it "just needed rings" to run which didn't bother me as I've always been into Hondas since I could drive and the engines are pretty simple. The previous owner never figured out a shifter setup as early Hondas had solid rod shift linkage. The chassis wiring was atrocious but the engine came with a nice milspec harness which helped the sale.
Well once I got it home and inspected it, it had a cracked piston and the crank bearings were toast. I spent the winter rebuilding the engine. The rebuild was a pretty standard rebuild with stock bore, new pistons and around 10.5:1 compression due to needing to mill the head about 0.031 since it looked like it had overheated at somepoint.
Since I bought it I removed the rear fuel tank and installed a 8 gallon fuel cell, flipped the front tie rods to the bottom of the knuckles, and installed the shifter setup.
Currently the rail runs and drives. For the transmission a fabricator buddy of mine came up with linkage system using a Honda K series cable shifter with the D series transmission. This winter it's getting new wiring, new floor, bigger radiator, seats, dash clean up and a repaint.

Maybe they were deleted because they weren't VW-enough? OP has a few pix still showing in his gallery at the moment (LP beam, IRS rear axles), but it's Honda-powered. After all, this isn't a "sand rail" site, per se, so maybe more VW specificity is required. |

Thats bad ass. Id like to see more pics of rear suspension since whoever did it didn’t just use the whole Honda engine cradle and struts like most of these type of conversions that I’ve seen.
I had a buddy about 17 years ago that had a prelude he did the mini me swap to. He also had some other Honda that broke a connecting rod, kicked the half that was still connected to the crank out the side of the block and was still running. It was like it had a compound fractured femur bone jutting out but it was gunna quit running! _________________ Forced induction can overcome a lot of obsticles that gets in it's way

An interesting thing happens in forums where everyone starts parroting the same thing and "common knowledge" takes over.

I don't know what was going on with the photos. I too saw they weren't loading but I didn't have time to look into it but they were fixed when I came back.
I can get pictures this week of the rear trailing arms. The previous owner made them to make room for the engine. As for the front, that's just how the PO made that part of the floor. That's about to change as I have aluminum on the way to rid of the tacky diamond plate and to get a fresh palette for the restoration. |

I think that was supposed to be a front wing originally looking at it |

Hello, I'm writing from Chile, I just bought a sandrail this weekend with a Honda D series engine and L3 transmission. I also bought it with the engine not working and the gear lever is upside down. I see that you have it solved. Do you make it? Or would you help me make one here in Chile? If you could help me with which shifter to buy, the length of the cables or if there is a page where I can buy it, I would greatly appreciate it.
