So 30 psi will cause it but 18 will not?

Pressures different from what the engineers designed for can cause issues...

The 18 PSI was designed for Bias ply tires because the VW front end is so light that the tires would run on the center proton of the tread reducing the contact patch and making the steering squirrely and reducing braking efficiency now radial tires have a steel belt to keep the tread patch on the hwy. but the 18 PSI still gives the steering a firmer feel. The greater grip on the road amplifies any worn or loose parts and you get the wobble at 45-50 for some reason that's the magic number. I would just drive at 43 or 55 and hang on and blast through the wobble zone, worked for years because I hate front end work Laughing .

I gotta ask. The shop that fixed my Super wobble at 50mph said they replaced my track arm bushings, but I never hear that term here on the Samba. Are track arm bushings the same as control arm bushings? And are there inner and outer control arm bushings? I'd love to see a detailed sketch of the bushings used in the front end.

On the Supers they use a slightly different set-up. The radius rod and sway bar are built into one really....I assume that's what they meant by "track arm"

It's good practice to replace all front end bushings at once.....cured my horrible death wobble instantly.

"Track arm" and "Control arm" Are the same thing.

This is my old bushing, this is what caused my wobble. It is NOT possible to inspect these without disassembly.

Technically (for a '71), 18 psi is the radial tire spec:
