I was just listening to the podcast. I feel like the name could have been something great, but was instead tarnished by a bunch of thugs. Really a shame because those guys had a good eye for style. Makes sense why my mother was telling me lots of bugs got stolen in the 80s. |
Thanks for listening to the Podcast with Myself and Bill Noguera. The name Buggs Buddies is still great because were the first to start a Vintage VW style that is worldwide, duplicated and appreciated all over the world today. Just like the early Hot Rodders and Lowriders of the 1950s and 1960s, the Buggs Buddies went against the norm at the time. Me personally I grew up at Florence and Alameda where Huntington Park and South Central meet. If you don't know in the 1980s it was and still is a low income and crime ridden area. The Browns and Blacks were gangbanging and killing each other over streets. Personalizing and Customizing are cars were for many in my neighborhood an outlet if you didn't want to get involved with the gang life. Yes it was wrong stealing VW's in my Teen years and I can tell you today I have turned my life around with a higher calling but think about our environment and role models or lack thereof back then. We were just trying to survive our neighborhoods. I'm not trying to make excuses for myself and my club the Buggs Buddies but whether you like us or hate us, we did influence to this day everyone that has or built an all original Vintage VW slammed on Porsche Alloys and a Large Displacement engine. Buggs Buddies are the pioneers of the Chicano LA Cal Style (Resto Cal). _________________ 1955 151 Deluxe L219 Congo Green (Project)

On the bright side, at least we weren't going to get molested, or touched-up by our coaches and teachers. |
