Hello, Thank you for letting me join. I just bought my dream car. It is a 71 Vw Bug. I have wanted a bug of my own since ce iwas young so at 55 I bought me one. I was raised with volkswagons(Bugs and buses) and learned to drive in one. Now I'm learning to work on my very own bug. It's all coming together but I still can't completely figure out the chassis number meanings but I have figured out that she has a 73 motor instead of the original

A 73 engine isn't much different from a 71.

A lot of parts are mix-n-match, so don't assume anythng is correct for the year.

The vin number should also be under the spare tire and on the dash at the windshield. And there’s plenty of vin break charts online. It should be simple to figure out.

The "VIN" on these classic VWs isn't encoded with much... model number, year, then just a serial number, that's it.

They aren't like modern VINs with things like engines, transmissions, colors encoded in the 17 digits.

Congrats on your new purchase! I have a 72 and love it! Enjoy it and enjoy all the mysteries that go along with vintage VW's!
