I had a horrible experience with this guy.
I found Greg Hale (“Splitz by Aggie”) on the Samba and hired him in September 2022 to restore my 63 Bus - 23 window deluxe. The terms were a fixed price, a little over half up front (to buy parts etc.) and remainder at completion with a commitment to be done in 8 months.
Once I paid the deposit, he stonewalled me. A year later, he hadn’t even begun work in earnest on the bus. It was clear that none of my deposit had been used towards my bus. I flew out to see him in his shop 3 times and all I got was “I’ll get your bus done.”
After bugging him for 18 months, he takes the bus apart and does a few weeks of metal work. The bus now in pieces, he tries to force new payment terms. He wants another huge payment (50% increase over the total cost we agreed upon) and a third payment on delivery.
I expected and was prepared for unforeseen cost overruns, but after what I experienced with him there’s no way I could trust him. I asked for some sort of proof or transparency that money I would pay him would go toward my bus. He got angry and refused to reach any compromise (another red flag.)
In May 2024, picked up my bus (in pieces) and found another, more established shop to finish my project. I’m out thousands of dollars because of this guy. But the worst part is that he turned what I had wanted to be a super fun project building my dream bus into a horribly souring experience.
It appears others had a good experience with this guy. Not me. |

I just got my 1962 VW Microbus from Greg Hale in Huntington Beach CA. I can't believe how beautiful it is. Everything turned out EXACTLY the way I wanted it. Greg did an awesome job meeting all my special requests. I had him install AC, spin-on oil filter, external auxiliary oil cooler on a 1776 cc engine. Greg is honest, funny, and professional. He's great to work with and is now a friend for life. If you want a GREAT bus see Greg Hale. |

Update on my previous post regarding bad experience with this guy:
I took my bus to a more established VW shop and they found serious quality issues with almost all of the metal work Greg Hale’s shop did on my bus. They literally have to undo his stuff and start all over. New metal was welded right on top of rusted metal, rust sections were cut out and not repaired and the quality of the welding was horrific.
Greg took a lot of my money and I got nothing but bad work and a bad experience in return.
