I've had some very intermittent electrical problems with Sandy. No pattern to them, just an occasional head scratcher. Once in a while the gauges won't light up, the usb power port won't work and then all is fine again....
So I pulled the dash and decided to rewire everything once I saw the mess. There were loose grounds, bad butt connectors etc.....
So let the fun begin!

It all made sense to someone at some time.

One of my prior buggies came to me with a circuit breaker designed for a house wired in! In addition to bits of Romex and household wire nuts.
I never bought a buggy/kit car that I didn't gut the wiring from.

HA - that's a tad better than brown lamp cord! I never thought the OEM VW wiring was pretty - good thing it was covered with the card board bit. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I happen to like wiring cars. I think most people don't. Maybe because it's tedious, but I find it sort of Zen like. Calm attentiveness. I like to start with a common positive connection to which each branch circuit is connected to the fuse box, as well as one for the ground. Seems to flow better.

One thing, when cutting zip ties cut them flush with the "knot" the sharp angle edge you leave using diagonals can be like so many knife blades waiting to get you..... I have a 4 inch long scar on my arm from some ass who didn't cut them properly at a work location, it sliced like a knife, and in my career it was a requirement to cut them flush.....
Solution is to use "flush cut" pliers and get them up tight and personal with knot.... _________________ “Fear The Government That Wants To Take Your Guns" - Thomas Jefferson.

Quick question... Can the hot wire for the voltmeter be attached to any keyed hot source? _________________ 1966 Manx clone (possibly a Joe Poty Enterprises) named SANDY. '70 to '73 1300 cc w/1600 DP heads, twin carbs and headers |

Before tie wraps, cable splicers used a waxed nylon string to bundle wires. I wouldn't mind having a few rolls of that string. The knots lock together and you just snip the ends off. No bad hand slices from string. Would have a vintage look too. _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

Thanks. That's one gauge that has been giving me sporadic failures. I think I found the reason. Four butt connectors and three wire color changes in two feet plus a poorly attached spade connector. Time for one solid piece of wire.... _________________ 1966 Manx clone (possibly a Joe Poty Enterprises) named SANDY. '70 to '73 1300 cc w/1600 DP heads, twin carbs and headers |

Lacing tape is still available if you want to go that route. _________________

I get it Dale. I've been an electrician my whole adult life. There has always been a "rivalry" between the electricians and the "phone guys".
Just good friendly (mostly) ribbin'.
Most of the phone guys I worked with were very skilled at laying down their cables and tying it down with dental floss. It was beautiful, most of the time. _________________
