what gauge sheetmetal are beetle panels? I have to do a small patch on bottom of door and need to get some metal. what about the hood as well, need to do small repair there too

They used a metric thickness instead of gauge but I remember it was 21-22 gauge for body panels and around 18 gauge for the pan.

1 mm for body panels. That's 19 gauge, which can be kind of hard to find. 20 gauge works just fine. I measure and use what's closest. 20 gauge should be around .035.

Bear in mind, the panels started with 1mm sheet, though once pressed, highly stretched areas will get substantially thinner,

Beetle body panels are typically 19 gauge (1 mm), but 20 gauge (.035") sheet metal should work fine for your repairs.
