Man, this brake job will be the death of me!
I had an experienced friend come to help today, so we freed up the last of the stuck hoses. Three of them refused to release even with ring spanner’s off the car, so I don’t feel too bad that we had to hacksaw one of the hard lines to get a socket on the nut.
Next came bending new brake lines to fit, which was entertaining, and left a lot of spilled brake fluid at the master cylinder. Annoyingly the right front hard line was shorter than the existing one and so we had to bend the hose/line bracket to make it fit.
More annoyingly, the rear hard lines to the wheel/drum were at least 10cm too short. The kit was to cover all LHD Ghias 59-74 but they didn’t have the 420mm lines in the diagram. I have contacted the supplier, hopefully replacements will be forthcoming!

I haven’t had photos to give an update but I finally got the brake work all done and tidied up. I drained the reservoir and so we are sitting with nice fresh fluid in the system. A couple of tests drives and everything is working well.
Because the Ghia won ’Best in Show’ at a local show last year it has qualified for a ‘Champion of Champions’ slot in one of Scotland’s biggest car shows, the extravaganza held at Glamis castle. It feels like a privilege to be able to show the car there and I want her to look her best! I have had trouble getting the beauty rings for the wheels to fit but I think by sanding off some of the paint on the steel rim 3/4 of them now fit solidly and one doesn’t seat properly. I think I will leave them off and fit them at the show.
I spent the day yesterday washing, waxing and cleaning the Ghia inside and out and gathering things together for the trip. We will take the (new) campervan and stay Friday and Saturday nights and they ask that entrants show the vehicles on Saturday and Sunday. Should be a fun experience!
Pics are from a test run for the brakes and during the wash session.

Thanks Jeff! You’ve inspired me to be a bit more diligent about posting and showing some pictures leading up to, and over the weekend.
The Ghia has been to plenty of shows and I usually feel like I enter to get a good parking spot, and to get the chance to chat to people about her, and folk are always interested in the story.
The Ghia is tucked up in the garage now, until we leave
I don’t have lots of ‘accessories’ but I’ll show you what I’m taking along for this weekend:
Front trunk, with original repaired card liner
Picnic rug (to protect the liner!)
Period picnic chair
Period picnic table (for the information folder/articles about the Ghia)
Period foot pump and tool roll, factory tool roll (and some actual, useful tools!)
Info folder, articles, owners manual, laminated info cards
Beauty rings, NOS hub caps and a spare hub cap (pessimist!)
You probably know the weather in Scotland is unpredictable and if she gets soaked/dirty on the way I’ve got a basic cleaning kit: car shampoo, wax, chrome polish and glass cleaner.
I’ve realised that all makes me sound super serious (which I’m not!) but I guess I just want her to look her best and not be overshadowed at what is a pretty big, all marques show.

Your Ghia always looks like it is fresh from the factory. So clean and shiny! Lovely car in such an awesome color that is obviously well cared for. You do excellent work. _________________ Marc

I bought new "Vitour" thin white wall tires for my 71 Ghia. They were a little over $400 delivered. They looked great when new. I originally would clean them with regular Simple Green and they would clean up really well but soon started looking dull and over time they now look very brown. In my case its the black rubber that's slowly coming through the white wall. I called the tire dealer and was told that it's a budget priced tire and the black rubber bleeds into the white over time. I hope this is not what's happening with your tires.
Nothing will whiten the tires I bought other then white wall "markers" which I plan to try.
For my 68, I bought better quality Coker white walls. Its been over almost 2 years and they still clean up easily with Simple Green and look as good as new. _________________ Marc

Yeah, they’re definitely budget tyres (Golden tyre, or something like that!)
We’ve had 11 years out of them, so I’m not too cut up about them. I’ve never really had a good go at cleaning them, so I’ll try a few different options. After the glycerine, Blue magic is supposed to be good. Failing that, there are a couple of stronger whitewall products or, as you say, ‘markers’ I can try. We’ll see! _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper
