Unbroken Bonds of Battle by Johnny Joey Jones.
Mr Jones lost his legs in Afghanistan while working as an EOD ( Explosive Ordinance Disposal). But the book is more about other heroes he had contact with.

'a spy among friends' by ben macintyre. well written and a fascinating insight into how trust in 'the old boy' network blinded people to what was obviously happening.

neville shute's 'the trustee from the toolroom' found in a charity shop. a really good 'old style story' with a quiet, unassuming hero and written by an author with an eye for technical detail. I was going to say it's a man's book but my sister in law liked it too.

one of my most enjoyable reads, ''Depraved" the story of H.H.Holmes, America's first serial killer.

I enjoyed reading 'the future' by naomi alderman. a novel about tech companies, the moguls that own them, slaves to the algorithms. the future we have and the (better) one we could share...
โ€œIn terms of saving the whole planet, what is the smallest number of people youโ€™d need to get rid of to move the needle? What is the smallest number of lies? โ€ฆThe question is how many unintended casualties are too manyโ€ฆโ€

The 'Slough House' series by Mick Herron are really good. (The series Apple TV+ based 'Slow Horses' on.)

Essentially, they're spy thrillers, but the context and dark humour make them very bingeable.

what? a two ronnies sketch that doesn't include the punchline! d'oh!

having spent 25 years working in public libraries I can confirm that this sketch is based on how the public will ask for a book. they could never remember the title or author but 'it was green and had a man on the front cover...' Rolling Eyes

just reading 'don't let's be beastly to the germans', by daniel cowling, about the british zone and the ccg after the war. well written and entertaining there's a couple of brief references to ivan hirst and vw etc but it mainly gives a good background to the zeitgeist from 45 to 49.
the title is a nod to the noel coward song

l just finished
the way of the dragon, #3 of the young samurai series, l didn't know it was the 3rd book in the series.
l'm currently half way through
from the earth to the moon, by jules verne. considering that it was written 104 years before neil armstrong landed on the moon, they knew an awful lot of what we know as fact today.

I just finished...."Stiff - The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach.

It caught my attention at my local used bookstore. Pretty macabre and in some places disturbing.

A quote from the book....."Being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back. The brain has shut down. The flesh begins to soften. Nothing much new happens, and nothing is expected of you."

^ I remember reading that a while back. at the time my parents were saying that their bodies could be used 'for science' after they died, probably thinking of noble medical research, and that book showed what lesser known purposes they could be used for...

in a similar vein - 'the immortal life of Henrietta Lacks'

just finished reading 'question 7' by richard flanagan and I think it will stay in my mind for a long while. difficult to summarise but it's about the chain reactions, both near and far, that affect our life... and death.
