Looking at an older 914 that's been sitting, seller claims it's a 74. I got an engine pic here - can anyone identify the year and displacement of this thing? I believe it's a 1.7 but the car has bumper boobs like a '74. Thanks.

Looks like a stock 1.8L engine which would be correct for that year. Remove air cleaner and check for the engine serial #. Then look that number online. Since it still has stock fuel injection - I suspect it has original guts.
a 1.7 will start with W/EA/EB
a 1.8 will be EC
a 2.0 will be GA/GC
I added the boobies to my '72 914 to give it some parking lot protection. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

A 1.8 would have L jet fuel injection. The one in the picture has D jet _________________ Jack Staggs

You beat me to it.
The D-jet marks it as either 1.7L or 2.0L ....though it must be said that it's not outside of the possibility that some enterprising owner swapped in a 1.7L or 2.0L ....or that it's actually a 1.8L with D-jet from a 1.7L or 2.0L swapped onto it. Both will work (though not ideal) with a little tuning.
Further points, it's likely a 1.7L engine or at least an injection system. The 1.7L had the TB off to the side near #1 .....and the 2.0 had a vertical TB on the center plenum so that air cleaner (which is a late 1.7L with paper filter) would not fit on top of the center manifold like it is in the picture if it were set up for a 2.0L.
Lastly, from what I can tell it has straight and not necked up runner pipes so they cannot be 1.8L.

Easy to view the VIN and determine the actual year of the vehicle. I wouldn't buy any car without comparing the Vin on the title to the actual VIN on the vehicle. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

I agree, 1.7 aircleaner, 4 stud intakes, looks like a 1.7 to me as well. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |
