|
|
I would like a new cable for my decklid but none I find have the right knob. Early Beetle hood cables have the right knob but not the right length.
Has anyone solved this?
From the Jan 57 Part book the number is 141 827 531 at 2070 mm length for the rear deck lid. The front hood is 143 823 531 at 1510 mm. These are the ones I have and shown in the picture and mimic the Oval Beetle design at the time. While I never studied part numbers why does the rear start with 141 which is a convertible designator?
The next design from the July 58 Part book the number is 141 827 531 A at 2070 mm length for the rear deck lid. The front hood is 143 823 531 A at 1510 mm. These are available as reproduction parts.
For reference the front Beelte hood 52-66 I believe is 113 823 531 and I don’t know the length
The company making the Beetle ones could make these simply by leaving the cable longer and customer trim to 2070mm or 1510mm. In fact my parts book has a hand written note of the deck lid part number right next to the front hood so they only had to store one parts.
I had one of the later hood cables from a 1959 Ghia Coupe and here is the part number on the knob. I don’t see that number listed in my part books. 141 823 535

Perhaps contact the company and ask if they can make one with a longer cable? |

I don't know if that worth the trouble, but as last resort you can make 1 out of 2. I've done it before. Get yourself an new reproduction, later one. Also and Bettle one. Cut them in the thicker part 1-2 cm. after the knob and weld them together. Simple and it works. I personaly used an old knob with really short cable (just for the knob) and a local company made me a long cable with crimped thicker metal rod to weld it to the knob. _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

This might be a stupid question but are you sure that the decklid gets the same type knob as the hood? KGPR says the smooth knob is the correct knob for a lowlight. I like the look of the oval window era knob better. John Moxon or Loren can you report back with a pic from you cars? _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

Yea that would work and I can use my original knobs that are in good condition. _________________ http://karmannghias.org/
