Hi folks. A friend of mine bought a 36horse engine with dual solex 28pci carburettors. The heads are stock so single ports. He is having icing issues right below the carburettor. The temperature here is pretty cold and humidity is high. How can he solve this ? Engine runs very nice on startup , very good throtlle respons also but starts to sputter after a few minutes and then dies. The manifolds are selfmade. Balance tube is connected. Any thoughts ? If was thinking maybe make a connection from the heaterboxes to the airfilters with a hose ? Any thoughts ? Thx

you need to rule out the basic tuneup items first. Points gapped right? Timing set right? Valves set?Spark plugs in good condition, no cracks? No vacuum leaks? Idle mixture and rpm in spec? Are your dual carbs still using chokes ...dual carbs don't need them ...if everything is fine you may need to add heat risers

I live in a similar winter climate (humid). In my experience running Riechert 34 PCIs, carb preheat helped a lot on my 1600"S" single port engine.

Tweaks:

1. PRESSURIZED heat from the driver's side heaterbox vent to the air filters in winter to help with fuel atomization
2. Added 2 inch rubber stacks to raise the air cleaners, acting as a velocity stack (not needed running VW oil baths due to built in velocity stacks)
3. Phenolic spacers between the manifolds and carbs for hot weather (I put those on all dual carbs)

My 1.5 cents. Good luck.

John

That's a slick set up, do you disconnect it or block it off for summer or is it still fine?

Thanks Everett - it works very well in helping cold, damp weather driveability. The key is that the air is pressurized.

Yes, in the summer I simply reach behind the fan shroud, disconnect the single hose at the bottom of the T, install a round plug, and reattached the hose. Takes 1 minute.

I'm currently reinstalling a set of factory carb pre-heater air horns on my '59 356 for the same reason. They direct hot air at the carbs, and shut off when air temps hit 20C (if memory serves me correctly).

My 1 cents.

J
