It's nothing that fancy. I think they are fugitives from a Fox-bodied Mustang!

Yes, it's amazing what the right decal choice can do!

The Bubble Bus looks like another winner!
Changing the headlights and adding the peace sign decals was a great choice, and really ties the whole build together. Great job with the refresh! |

They're referred to as a Brooklands windscreen. I helped a friend install one on his Lotus 7. |

Meng just announced this new kit with resin printed suspension. Debating whether or not or not its worth the price tho. It's 3x the cost of the plastic wheeled kit.

Top notch, Undis- I wish I could approach your skill level.
Is this another of your resin creations or a kit conversion? _________________ Aloha,

Wow, Undis, I've always been in awe of your modeling, but this one is on another level.
Being a model of the prototype, it doesn't need to be perfect, because everything on the prototype was ill-fitting, and the body seemed shaped like a banana!

I have a plan to make a scale model of the earliest known Type 2 prototype. I will base it on the Revell 1:16 panel van kit, naturally with a huge amount of modifications.
I have already done their Samba so know how the kit comes together and its limitations.

Thank you BB! As you can see I missed the sagging roof, but everything else is very close. The cargo doors don't fit flush and the paint finish is not showroom quality. _________________ Check out my Facebook page: Volkswagen Prototypes. |

1949 VW transporter prototype based on Revell panel van 1:16 kit.
As soon as I decided to tackle this build. I realized that I’ll have to scratch-build most of it. I had already done the Samba previously so I knew how the kit goes together and its limitations.
The chassis and most of the interior bodywork would need too much modification, so I decided to build the entire chassis from scratch. To complement the early styling of this vehicle, I used several parts that I had copied from the Tamiya Kübelwagen. The parts used are:
Front suspension
Engine and transmission combo
Rear axles, reduction gears and torsion plates
Wheel rims
Steering wheel
Gear shift base
There are only a few parts that I ended up using from the panel van kit
Nose panel
Roof
Both side panels
Cargo and cab doors
Inner cab door handles
Pedals
Headlights
Hubcaps
Tires
Windscreen glass
Engine lid handle (modified into an L handle)
Sunroof handle copied 3 times in resin and used on all doors
And the front bumper, modified to match the shape of the early type.
All the body panels are heavily modified to backdate them to 1949 and to enhance details such as the cab doors having proper door cards.
Everything else on this build is scratch built in plastic, resin and metal.
As is the case with a lot of models, some of the details are hardly noticeable, but I know they are there.
One good thing about this build was that when you look at photos of the original van, you can see how rough it was with lots of imperfections, doors not lining up or sitting flush. This was the first one built and it must have been finished in a hurry with the intent of having a full size rendition of the new transporter. When building this model, I didn’t have to worry about it being perfect.

Udis, great job! All of your builds are unique and done to a high level of detail and this one is no exception. The engine lid support is amazing, as is so many other details shown in your pictures.
The only issue, and I hate to say this, is that the original protype VW panel van was build using the standard beetle pan construction which is why they started to sag during testing. I thought that only in later versions was the ladder frame reinforcement added.
I had a similar idea to build a barndoor panel van out of the 58 Revell Micro bus, and even made a few mods to the roof but you beat me to it.
