Here is a piece of literature that I found recently. It has loads of information on ordering buses, including special paint. Some of these colors have been seen, some have not been seen to my knowledge.

If only every dealership had put this kind of info out, we would probably have more special paint buses.

Lind dropping some spectacular literature info up in here. I have never heard of Alcan White.

This Double Cab that Bus Bro Gene owned is SK618B. I wonder how far off it is from SK618A?

Has anyone seen an SK624 Orange bus before?

I have seen pics of the Double Door Orange slider but its a '67 which would make it a 523 paint code bus

A local mechanic recently showed me this list from a later year.... I think 1966. It's a cool document. He got it from a customer that ordered his car with unique options from the factory for European delivery (much like the program that Volvo and others have today).

Many special paint seem to follow patterns:

firetruck red and postal yellow prior to 1958. I think that when sealingwax red and light grey showed up in mid '58 as standard colors there was less call for special paint buses.

sand green over palm green westfalias in the SO-23 era coming out of the chicago distributor area

sand green trucks coming out of the portland distributor area

pearl white or dove blue singletone deluxes prior to 1965.

military green buses in Europe

postal yellow buses in Germany

what other patterns do people see?

Can you borrow it and scan it? It would be great to see that info.

Wow that’s a great piece with some interesting stuff. Guess it gives a definite answer to this thread about the white roofs being an option. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=329857&highlight=white+roof

I can't recall ever seeing a 15-Window painted SWR with only a white roof instead of a Beige Grey or other color upper half.

I honestly wouldn't think it was a legit factory thing without proof.

Not to derail things but I pointed this out to Lind because I thought it was funny:
The luggage rack with ladder price combo is $92.31

The separate prices are $81.81 and $10.52, which adds up to: $92.33

So you save 2 cents buying both at once. Laughing

Adjusted for inflation, that would be like 21 cents.

Also adjusted for inflation, the rack and ladder would be about $1,000. That is about what you could buy a repro rack and ladder for these days, or an original rack and ladder if you are patient.

Radio $1,000 or $1,200

Safaris $230

I'll take the safaris over the super expensive AM radio.

Lind,

Thanks for posting. This is amazing information.

My old postal yellow double cab also came out of the Portland, OR dealership.

One could save a whole $28.29 by omitting side/rear gates on SCs. Adjusted for inflation, that's closer to $5k now. Smile

About $300, which is 10% of what I sell reproduction gates for. I do thing a perfect set of original take-off gates would easily sell for 2x or 3x that.

I would like to know and learn about some "detailing":

Option nomenclature for the colours SK**** will come from SonderKunstlack or would derivate from Sikkens, as from Supplier of Paint?

Anyone knows?

... I am not suprised a radio unit at that time was wayyyy more that just fancy glass windows. Not surprised.

SK is the German abbreviation for special paint. SonderKunstlack

Definitely not Sikkens. They probably used multiple paint suppliers anyway over the years.
