Pre-55 door striker plate material

I have only seen pre-55 door striker plates made from cast "pot metal", which is non-magnetic, but I just acquired one that is heavier weight than normal, and I found it to be magnetic like it is made out of cast iron. It looks NOS, although it doesn't have VW markings on it. Were they ever made out of cast iron?

Could it be an aftermarket part? Never seen one.

I have seen one that was rusty, it was on a 50 shell that I had many years ago. I'll ask the current owner what happened to them

That’s what I was thinking - they would rust, which I feel makes it a strange choice. The quality is excellent and it looks NOS. I’ll post a picture later this weekend when I am back near my storage and let folks see what is have and share any other insights.
