Hi,
1966 Bug still running 6 volts.
I can't figure out why my horn on is almost inaudible.
It will blow nice and loud when I hook it to an outside power source. I also, cleaned the ground to the horn where it is bolted to the car.
I have continuity from both wires coming from the horn. One is brown and the other is black with a yellow stripe. When I follow the black wire with the yellow stripe to the fuse block connector, (# there is another wire that looks factory pig tailed to it, and I am not sure what that wire is. Maybe that is the problem?
I have continuity with the wires hooked up to the steering column and the other wire that is connected to the (rag joint)?
There is continuity with the brown wire in the steering ring. I do get a spark there as well.
Any ideas before I take off the horn ring and look around?
Thanks. |

You have resistance in your wiring or connections.
Positive voltage will go to the horn itself, and the other wire eventually goes up through the steering column and grounds when the horn ring is pressed. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Thank you.
Well, the horn is working again.
I cleaned everything and had continuity everywhere and it still wouldn't work properly until I took it for a cruise.
It must be the nice weather! But we will see how long the repair lasts. |

That brown ground wire from the horn connects to a brass tab that is riveted to the steering column under the fuel tank LR corner. The problem is that the riveted connection gets corroded and causes voltage drop problem there. Best fix is to solder the brass tab directly to the column, or at least solder a short section of wire between the two.
