|
|
.
My 55 oval sits in a very small garage, which a while ago, when I opened the door I noticed a lot of tranny fluid on the cardboard underneath the car. (Cardboard is always a VW must)
I do not know how much fluid is left.
No room in the small garage to know what is going on.
My main garage is about 50 ft away, but prior to that, need to go reversre and forward ~ 3x to make a turn to face the driveway.
Is it ok to very gently drive it( lowest speed/rpm effort made) that distance vs pushing it? After pushing it out of the small garage, there is a large area of 3/4 inch gravel making it tough to push off of. My back is not the greatest.
I will over inflate the tires to make rolling better...
Is "driving it" save to do?
Thanks _________________ 1955 3-fold semaphore Oval beetle

I will give you some info from what I have experienced. You will need to decide if it works for you.
I worked professionally as a mechanic, in a ACVW shop, for several years. During just that time, I had first hand interactions with several different ACVWs running and driving with little (I mean a few ounces) to nothing in the transmissions. A few were daily drivers.
I personally towed (with a tow bar) a few Bugs with no transmission oil. One of those made it with no issues afterwards. One of them lost its shit on the way home, costing me a few hundred bucks in towing and a bunch of frustration!
I have had a mix of experiences both ways with more than 30 AcVWs. I cannot give you a definitive answer.
Good luck which ever way you go! I am rooting for you! _________________ Jimbo

Nobody can really say what will happen or what the situation is-
But I can tell you I am certain that if you drive it 50 feet, or even a mile with a totally empty gearbox and it fails, it was going to anyway. If that short of a distance ends in disaster then there was no avoiding it, the damage was already done. _________________

Transaxle oil level is not as important as you think. I could drive to the store and back with no oil in the trans and not sweat it. And a large puddle on the cardboard sometimes only translates to a small amount of oil volume. You're fine to move the car around. _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval

The transaxle still spins when being towed with a towbar. I just had to move a jeep with the differential cover removed and went probably 150 feet. Drove fine no issues or damage. There was enough residual oil the it was well protected for that. Just cleaned it with brake clean reassembled topped of and it was perfect. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

it could just be a cracked axle boot not an actual trans leak . you need to jack it up n take a look to see where its coming from ..........ill bet the boot just cracked ??? |

Those boxes are fairly hardy, and there’s enough gear oil left in it - so it’s completely safe to move your car under its own power to your main garage 50ft away.

Thanks again all!
Probably will give it a try this weekend I hope.., and I am hoping it is something simple as a cracked boot otherwise quite a bit of time and money... _________________ 1955 3-fold semaphore Oval beetle

OK,
Got it in the garage under its own power... gentle and slow as ever.
No bad sounds from the tranny when it was moving..
just came out from crawling under it to find a boot has cracked well,
happy about that vs the 70 year old tranny having some mishap .
What bothers me is I put that boot on maybe 18 years ago, and it failed, whereas the one that came with the car is still intact
I am starting to look at what would be good quality rubber boot.. like from WCM, but first glance WCM sell seamless boots.. guess to put that one on need to disconnect the axle from the tranny. Rather not.
The seamed boots apparently do not leak at the seam at all.. and if I remember right, was not that bad to replace...although I have to look up again how to do it.
Then there is the question as to what oil goes into these boxes.
I changed it out before, but remember reading there was a better oil alternative that what I used.
Found it on WCM, but does not have their usual mention of "guaranteed for life, best quality rubber from WCM: kind of exposition
