I’ve been working on building the camping interior for the bus over the winter and am getting closer. Still have a ways to go but I’m pretty happy with it so far. I have never done any sort of interior build like this but think it’s turning out pretty good. I spent months thinking about the rear layout to optimize the fact that it has no rear window, this is what I’ve come up with.
Also added a rear bice bumper and built a rear ladder for it. I’ll be putting the front bice on it here soon.

This is one of my favorite "non-original" hacked buses.
That rear cooker setup is awesome!
If you want to protect that Baltic Birch and make it look antiqued and yellowed try a few coats of amber shellac. It will have matte/semi-gloss appearance.
Polyurethane is too shiny and modern looking IMO. _________________ WANTED:
58 Westfalia cabinet knobs (3 needed), roof rack, and (7) privy tent poles (silver painted).

Thanks man! I have been messing around with different finishes on some off cuts to get the color that I want, definitely going to attempt to make it look as original as possible and not too shiny. Once I get the interior all finished up then I’ll pull it all out and sand and finish the birch then. |

Haven’t had much time to work on the bus lately with other projects going on but I’ve been able to knock out a few small projects. Finally got the pop top sorted, first time it’s worked since the 70s I would assume. Curious, is this the oldest bus with a pop top? Never really thought much of it until the wife asked me the other day. I can’t think of any older.
Took the bus to a local show today which was great. Only split bus like usual.

This bus is over the top cool. Can't wait to see a canvas in there and some camping action shots. I wouldnt be in a rush to paint it. Has a great look as is. |

The “barnambulator” has a poptop. Yours might have been on the bus longer though.

Congrats on getting the poptop working. So nice to be able to stand up in a bus.
Safe to say yours is most likely the oldest bus with a poptop. The Barnambulator lost its poptop sometime around 2018. This is it's current look.
It still has the camper interior. _________________

Thanks man! The canvas should be going in in the next few months, I’ve got a buddy that does upholstery work that will custom make it for it.
I’m hoping to get the roof painted up this winter and then probably rock it for a little while until I can get the metal work finished. |

Crazy how nice it is being able to stand up in it, it’s hard to tell from the pictures but it’s over 7ft tall so there’s plenty of room to stand up even for taller people.
That barndoor is pretty killer it’s got a great look to it. |
