|
|
Hi all
I was about to do an auto transmission filter change on my 91 Vanagon, and as luck would have it I broke a transmission oil pan bolt off and need to extract it and replace it. Probably replace them all. The other three bolts are still in the housing and soaking in penetrating oil for the night.
Can anyone help me out with the thread pattern that I need? M 1x6x13mm? I can't seem to find any info on it. Id like to source bolts locally.
In advance, Thanks!

From memory they are the super common M8-1.25 bolts (8mm diameter, 1.25mm distance between threads). extracting another bolt without breaking would get you the length. You mentioned 13mm in your guess!?? With respect you may want to consider having a shop do the tranny service and get the broken bolt out.

Thanks. I meant 13mm socket.
I think all of the bolts were over torqued or have never been removed. either way once the other 3 are out hopefully my extraction tool should get the broken one out.

Definitely 8mm bolts. Not that long either. 16mm to 20mm would be my guess. with being away from our VW and spare transmissions to pull and check for you.
I can check once I get home. Someone else might chime in with the info from Ekat or similar. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

As long as it wasn’t cross threaded, it will likely back out easily. Start with a hammer and a center punch, hitting near the outside edge and walking it out.
If that doesn’t work, a left hand drill and reversed drill will often grab it and walk it out. You really need to drill it centered. Just in case someone else ends up saving you.
Often if you have access to a welder, you can weld a nut to the broken bolt and back out.
Lots of you tube videos on how to deal with broken bolts and studs. I’d start there. |

Same. I broke one off. Likely over torqued by the trans shop when they rebuilt it. I drilled it through and replaced it with a bolt and nut with no problem. |

I’d try every method to remove the broken bolt, before drilling it through and through bolting it with a nut and bolt. Maybe in an emergency, but It would just be a better repair if you can reuse the case threads. Just my opinion. |

For sure. It does work, but I'm going to try a bolt extraction tool and some heat. I'll drill thru as a Hail Mary if need be.
Thanks for the input! much appreciated _________________ 91 Vanagon

That's the plan Mark. The Hail Mary plan is a drill thru. I have done it on an old Chev truck of mine and had no issue. _________________ 91 Vanagon
