Hi,
I have a 1966 bug, 1300 all stock and still running the 6-volt system.

When my car is on and idling, I read 6.6 V at the voltage regulator.

With the car idling and all of the lights and high beams on it reads 6.2 V.

I noticed tonight when I was driving 45 mph with the lights on, the red gen light came on, the red gen light was very dim.

When I came to a stop sign, the red gen light went out even when I put the high beams on.

Any idea what this could be?
Battery, starter, and all ignition components except for the coil, are new.

Measure the voltage across the battery.

See https://speedyjim.net/htm/gen.htm but divide the numbers there in HALF because you have a 6-volt system

When I measure the voltage at the battery with the car faster than idling (that is when the red light comes on), it measures around 7.2

I took some time this morning and cleaned up all of the connections at the regulator and generator. I also noticed that someone added a hard start relay so I cleaned up everything there and all of the grounds that I could find.

The red light is now fainter, but it still comes on when idling faster, goes away at idle.

If you take the time you can clean up every electrical connection and the lights will be brighter. takes time but benefits are worht it.
