Hello Team,

My van got a mystery dent in the back door, right below the window, over the winter, possibly from a snowplow. I’m sitting in the repair shop and they don’t sound hopeful. “I don’t know if we can do this. We have to pop that window out and if we touch that rust, I don’t know. I don’t know if we can do it.” Yes, there’s a new spot of rust right along the rear window trim.

Honestly, they just want new cars, in and out. They don’t like the looks of an old van. I asked about some paint on another spot, you know, while they’re at it, and they him-hawed and said, “I just don’t know about these old vehicles. You might need a restoration shop.”

So who in Salt Lake can do this and isn’t scared of a vehicle from 1985??

I’ve always taken my ‘86 to
Driftwood/Wasatch Auto Body although it’s pretty much rust free because I don’t drive it in the winter because they salt the roads there. Not cheap, but they have always done good work for me.[/quote]

Talk to the folks at VW Upfitters - they’re Westy experts and I’m sure will have a recommendation.

Driftwood in SLC did a great job on my former van, but I believe they have merged with another shop and can't speak to the quality or pricing of the new and improved shop.

it sounds like the shop is just being honest.
they probably can't do what you are expecting....

we refer people with modern cars to a shop down the street and they refer people with old cars to us. everyone has a specialty.

knowing your limits and setting clear expectations are key to actually making money in these types of businesses.
