I’ve used the search function, though I’m not seeing anything quite like what I’m having problems with…or I could just be wording it wrong in the search tab.

Built a new 1776 and the engine will not start. I’ve swapped plugs, reset the valves, swapped distributors, swapped coils, rechecked the wiring 100 times, changed grounding points for the battery, swapped plug wires…….still will not start. Engine turns over, it’s getting air and fuel but won’t spark it seems. Used a multimeter and made sure I’ve got power to the coil. I’ve got spark to the distributor, the plugs have spark also. Really at a loss here, if anyone can help?

Does it backfire? If so, the distributor drive may be in 180 out. If so, swap 1 and 3 plug wires and swap 2 and 4

find top dead center on #1. Then check to see where the rotor is oriented and make sure the plug wires line up accordingly on the cap.

Okay swapped everything around, everything looks good. It’s better, now when cranking it wants to start and just doesn’t. Seems like it’s one good spark away from starting…

if you keep struggling with it you may have to consider the cam may be out of sync... I had that happen once when i was younger.... it was two teeth off and would chuff and chuff and act like it wanted to start but wouldnt. I hope thats not the case but its a possibility.

Have you verified you are 100% sure you are on TDC of THE COMPRESSION STROKE? TDC comes around 2 times per cycle.

Pull out the #1 plug, and have someone hold their finger over/in the plug hole while you turn the engine quickly by hand. They will feel the pressure rise as the piston comes up. That is the compression stroke. Once you find that, set the pulley to about 10deg BTDC, and pull off the rotor cap. Turn the dist. till one of the posts is aligned with the rotor, and make that your new #1. Wire up the others, and fire it up.

Apologies for the late response, got it fired up and running, thank you for the help. Was 180 out (didn’t even realise it) and just needed a little more timing
