It is home now under our carport. It runs fine, but chokes out after a few minutes because the mechanical fuel pumps diaphram failed and not only pumps a little, but dumps fuel into the crankcase so the dipstick is completely full and smells of gas. we will bypass with an electric one and drain and refill the oil. i gave the guy doing restoration a new fuel pump to replace it while he had it, so not the best feeling on that one since he left the old one on. if you ever pull the oil fill cap and see foam and a rev sends a stream out 5 feet, you need a new fuel pump and an oil change. _________________ The things i do may be Stupid, dumb, and you may not understand. so a "check ball" that looks like a bb and is part of the NEW carb on accelerator pump, got sucked into intake and was being slammed between piston and head, sounding like a knock. i sh$t you not. now getting new pistons, heads, pushrod tubes, etc. going 1641 now. _________________ The things i do may be Stupid, dumb, and you may not understand. Ouch! What a shame that your engine only had a few weeks of running time so far. Did the brass bent discharge tube for the accelerator pump passage pop out of its pressed-in fitting so that the check ball was pumped out? If so, where is that brass tube?
2 years ago I also had a small item travel down into the combustion chamber; was larger than a BB and it banged up the #2 head's chamber "ceiling" as well as the top of the piston. Was on a German-made Solex carb which I rebuilt a few years before, together with a stock oil-bath air cleaner. I could not see anything out of place on the carb. The metal "pellet" had rounded ends probably due to the pounding, and was approx. 3/16" long. I only drove about 2 miles before I turned off the engine as I reached my home driveway. I've repaired the damage but not yet reassembled the engine (am very lazy). I really want to get to it this month, since I miss driving my '77 Beetle. |

Not sure, as i wasnt the one doing the work when it happened. It now has had a top end rebuild, Cylinders, pistons, heads, rings, and a sportier exhaust that sounds mean as hell on it, now 1641 cc. Picked it up yesterday and drove it home and then later to the gas station and back. I asked the guy doing the work, but he kept swearing up and down that that couldnt be it, and told me i still need a new carb. I said So i bought a new carb and put on it, paid you for a carb you put on it, and now say i still need to purchase a third?(didnt make sense to me) He backtracked and finally said he would buy one and put it on. feels good in 1st and second, although lags on bottom of third until the RPM's get up a bit. _________________ The things i do may be Stupid, dumb, and you may not understand.
