I just bought a pair of nice OG popouts locally for my ‘66 and expected to see a piano-type hinge at the front where they screw into the B Pillar. There were none, just the S shaped vertical bracket attached to the trim with screws. When one opens the rear latch and pushes outboard how does the window pivot up front at the B Pillar without a pin? I didn’t see a piano hinge type pin depicted in the parts manual.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a hinge that has no moving parts. I’m trying to figure out how that solid piece of metal VW calls a hinge- secured to another solid piece of metal- the B Pillar, with screws- can allow the window to swing in and out when unlatched at the rear, or if I’m missing a part.

the metal just flexes. Spring steel in a S shape. Doesn't move that much.

Thank you!
So they are flex hinges. Very old metal. Are they prone to cracking or failing? Or is that rare? Wondering if I should replace the originals before installing.

I don't think it would be easy to remove or replace. I have never seen a replacement for that part. I've never seen a broken one either. The amount of movement they can take is quite a lot. I've seen the pop-outs extended twice the normal distance without breaking.

I rebuilt dozens of popouts and have never seen a broken flex hinge, a few rusty and ugly ones, inspect them and refit them, if you need one, they are here on Samba or Wolfsburgwests reproduction is very nice too.

Out of the hundreds of popouts I've bought and sold at swap meets I've seen maybe one window with a damaged hinge. It was on a "parts" Bug in the weeds before it landed in my swap meet stash.

Broken latches are way more common than broken hinges.
