For those that trailer your cars what kind of trailer do you have?
I currently have an 18ft open trailer, dovetail with 5 ft ramps, but it needs some work and I'm thinking of getting a different one. I want one with a winch plate already installed then spend money for someone to do alot of welding for what I have. For a bug I could get by with a 16ft length that would be easier to maneuver. |

You can push a Beetle onto a ramp if you eat your Wheaties. A bus needs two people or a bit of incline. _________________ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ |

Iโve trailered my Ghia a handful of times to shows that were far away. The luggage, cooler, chairs and pop up canopy is a little more than sheโll carry.
Iโve always rented a U-Haul trailer as I donโt like the tow bar thing. I have to extend the ramps with 2X10 steps as my Ghia is lowered which is kind of a pain.
I wish there was a winch so I like your train of thought on that. I thought about buying one but for the price around here, itโs more economical to rent for the few times Iโd need it. _________________ Volkswagen!

I have always used my construction equipment trailer, 16' with ramps.
Not ideal but it's paid for..
I have a winch on a portable mount that fits a 2" hitch receiver, and welded a spare receiver tube to the front end of the trailer deck. Now I just bring the winch when I need it, which means it's less likely to get stolen, and it gets used for other stuff too. _________________ modok wrote:

I have two car trailers, a 16' tandem axle and a 20' fully enclosed cargo trailer. Yes I have used both for my cars but I far prefer to drive them. The trailers are for break downs mostly and hauling other things. I drive the street Buggy everywhere no matter the distance. That is what I bought it for... to drive.
The sand rail is not street legal so I don't take it too far from home as a general rule but when I do I flat tow it with a tow bar. The truck and trailer get 16 to 17 mpg and the Jetta TDI gets 50+ mpg towing the sand rail so to me it's a no brainer! _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Iโve found it cheaper to rent wenches too, in the long run _________________ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ |

16 foot homebuilt landscape style trailer. Paid a few hundred bucks for it. But I have to climb in/out of the Ghia window to get it of or on. Thing moving is easier. Anything taller like a Toyora Landcruiser is fine as the doors are higher than the fenders. _________________ - 1973 Thing, 1970 Ghia, some LandCruisers and an old Ambulance |

Yes! This is a problem with any car that has a roof or a roll cage on either trailer! Another reason I prefer to drive them or flat tow. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

I just picked up a surplused U-haul car hauler. Iโll let you know in a few months how it goes I have 3 bugs to pick up and an entire shop to move this summer. But it tows super smooth empty. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

a U-Haul trailer is super nice. Small enough and low profile. The ramps stow away too. Been looking for a very used one they cannot use anymore. |

You can find the old steel ones occasionally. They deliberately chop the Al ones up to keep them off market, those are the unicorn _________________ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ |
