Hi there chaps
Looking for ideas on throttle spring returns ? I'm sure many of you Bus guys have encountered this ? and hoping that you have some ideas on how to fix my problem ?
I have just built a new 1800cc engine for my 67 Kombi. I have dual weber IDF 36's, and started him up for the first time today. Apart from two small oil weeps from the remote cooler, all is good, I'll probably need some time to get the carbs dialled in, but he started straight off, and is idling about 875/900rpm, and seems happy there. My problem is that my throttle is now all over the show it's sticky and unresponsive, and relying on the carb springs, doesn't seem to be doing the business, almost like they're not strong enough ?
Have any of you guys gone through this ? Have any solutions ? Firstly, I'm thinking of getting the new throttle mechanism for up front from Butty's bits here in the UK, as had heard good things about it, but wanted to try some sort of spring arrangement as well to ensure a good return ? How did you guys solve this ? PS : Linkage is new a CB hex bar kit
Cheers

You can add a spring up front easy. The butty bit is a good setup. Lube, new throttle cable helps and a tube for it above the trans also |

Do you have the throttle cable bowden tube in place?? Without that the cable rubs on the transaxle nose cone, and can even wear thru leaking out the gear oil. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

you absolutely do not need an additional return spring back at the engine, If its sticky and not smooth, then you have throttle cable issues.
are you using a braided cable? they are far superior to the solid wire cables.
as Eric or Barb mentioned, make sure your cable is not rubbing on anything between the chassis conduit and the guide tube in the shroud.
the Butty's bits kit is great, and the return spring at the pedal is helpful. _________________ drive your split. |

Thanks @sled
Yes, the cable is a solid one
I made sure the cable entered my roller tube correctly, it's within a flex with a sort of trumpet end ? and that is married up to my roller tube behind the shroud if that makes sense ?
this is what I have through the fan shroud
I will be ordering the Butty's bit mechanism tomorrow, and see how I go.
Desperate to get back on the road now _________________ 1966 VW Beetle ‘Jules’

You might need a set of springs like this.

solid wire cable is NOT designed to work with those guide roller tubes, nor is it designed to bend much as it exits through the shroud and hooks to the linkage.
do yourself a huge favor and get a braided cable (and a second to have on hand for spare).
you may need to shorten the cable to make the end line up perfectly in the barrel nut at the linkage, which is easy to do at the front of the bus with some cable crimps.
you don't need any additional springs in the engine bay...lemme ask you this...with the cable disconnected from the linkage and you open the throttles by hand, do the carb springs effectively snap the throttle plates closed? my guess is yes. Then, a small and flexible cable running through a nearly straight conduit from front to back should have very little resistance, meaning the springs on the carbs are only try to raise the throttle pedal back to its "raised" position...and then we run a return spring on the pedal itself which negates this load on the carbs.
dual IDF's in a bus should be buttery smooth and have a soft pedal feel if everything is set up correctly. _________________ drive your split. |

Hi @sled
Yes you are correct, normally the Carbs disconnected just snap shut.
And the soft buttery feel is what I would like
I have just bought the 15ft universal braided cable, and also the Butty's bit throttle linkage, so hopefully in a couple of days, I can report back.

Is that 15ft universal cable the big fat thick one? If so, those are less than ideal.
Do you have a link to the one you got? _________________ drive your split. |

You have a media sand dune or a million years of caked grease in the clutch tube. use a drill and a funky old frayed cable to rotoroot it out |

Spray brake parts cleaner is the tube and used compressed air to force it through. Put a bottle on the other end to collect the crap that comes out. _________________ Glenn

All sorted.
Bought the Butty's Bits throttle linkage, and a universal cable.
Old solid cable pulled out, and believe it or not, I pushed the new braided cable all the way to the back, greasing it as it went, and hey presto !! it actually came out straight into the engine bay
I haven't shortened it fully yet, and fitted the pin, as wanted to make sure all is good, so for the moment have just doubled it back, and tightened like that. Pedal is Night and Day better
